Cincinnatis Great Disasters explores catastrophes from 1905 to 1937, featuring floods, tornadoes, fires, explosions, winter storms, and crashes. Although tragic, disasters became popular postcard subjects in the early 1900s, with many of these photograph postcards being taken by professional photographers. The postcards documenting the 1907 and 1913 floods make up the bulk of this book, as these disasters dramatically affected Cincinnatians lives and led to innovative flood prevention planning and health initiatives. Flooding ultimately determined where businesses and residences were located in the city and was a driving force behind urban renewal of the riverfront.

Hardly any other river has suffered as greatly from the drastic confluences of natural and cultural dynamics as the Ohio River. The waterway, an important means of transport and communication, was vital to the growth of the Ohio Valley region in the nineteenth century.Commercial hubs and industrial cities, such as Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Cincinnati, sprung up along its banks; it served both as a sewer and as the infrastructural artery. However, this seemingly harmonious union of nature and culture was called into question by repeated flooding. Uwe Lübken has examined both the increasing use of flood plains and the assimilation of flooding into local knowledge, analysing the ways in which past disasters were remembered or forgotten and the history of flood defences. He presents the history of flooding in the Ohio River as a history of risk, in which river use and hazards are closely intertwined.

The worst weather disaster in Ohio history is the Flood of 1913. The flood hit Hamilton harder than any other city in Ohio. Hamilton has one of the largest collections of 1913 Flood photographs in the Miami Valley. The centennial commemoration of the disastrous Flood of 1913 made available hundreds of photographs of the flood and its aftermath. The availability of the photographs prompted the recreation of over 360 historical 1913 Flood images from the vantage point of the photographers of 1913. The photographs capture the images of 1913 and 2013 in a 13-mile route that covers six regions of Hamilton affected by the flood.

The rain began to fall on Easter Sunday, March 23, 1913. In Troy, 15 people lost their lives during the flood due to drowning, and in the weeks and months that followed an unknown number died from flood-related diseases. The story of what happened in Troy has often been overlooked, but in 1976 the Troy Historical Society Oral History Committee interviewed Troy flood survivors as a project for the bicentennial of the United States. These interviews, preserved on audiotapes, provide researchers firsthand accounts of what happened in the town. The late Mrs. Lois Shilling Davies, a past president of the Troy Historical Society who lived in Troy during the flood, deserves much of the credit for this invaluable resource, for it is she who conducted many of the interviews. Images of America: Troy and the Great Flood of 1913 relates how residents endured without having any instruction or experience in emergency preparedness. This is a celebration of human bravery, kindness, and ingenuity—of people who triumphed over tragedy.
