Excerpt from A Pilgrim and His Pilgrimage It has occurred to me that the story of my life as told by myself would, in a measure, be interesting to many whose life has touched and enriched my own. Many of these have gone to their reward, but their children, and in some cases their grand-children, re main and they will read with pleasure what is said in this book of the persons and places so sacred to their memory. While the greater part of the story deals with that part of my life devoted to the ministry and particularly to the pastorate, I have spoken of my ancestry and my early life in order to give completeness to it. Excerpt from Stories of the Pilgrims A desire to know more of a story than these lessons gave, was another valuable result. For this desire on the part of the children to see a story in its natural setting, and to know what came before and what followed after, showed that they had reached the period which is a happy time for laying a strong foundation upon which to build later work; a. Time in which the awakened interest in people and events should be used to establish a firm basis for future reading and study in both biography and history. The Pilgrim Stories as originally written were read in a number of schools with the same satisfactory results. Now, carefully revised and graded in vocabulary, they are offered in book form with the hope that other pupils and teachers may use them with equal benefit and pleasure. Excerpt from The Pilgrims' March He dabbed his chin thoughtfully with his shaving brush, and stared out beyond his looking-glass into a green world of tree-tops rocking to and fro in the morning sunlight. Between them, here and there, he could see blue fragments of the distant downs, and the delicate, windy line that divided them from the sky. He sighed a little, and returned to his soaping. Now there was a time, he proceeded, there was a time when I rose punctually, if not with the lark, at any rate no later than nine in the morning at least; wasn't there, Barker? Although this book was written more than 300 years ago, The Pilgrim's Progress continues to be reprinted and gain new readers throughout the years. It has also been published in no less than 200 languages and is widely read the world over, so much so that it is said to be second to the Bible in terms of readership. The author sails through his narrative without dividing it into chapters. Instead, he separates his saga into 2 parts. He begins with a poetic Apology before taking readers to the first-person account of Christian, the Pilgrim and main protagonist of this Christian-themed story. The Pilgrim Christian's experience is the highlight of the first part of the book. The second part reveals the experiences of Christian's wife, Christiana, as well as his four sons. In part I, they did not accompany Christian on his pilgrimage as they could not be persuaded to do so. In part II, they decide to go through the same route that Christian took and went through various difficulties unique to them. The other characters in the book are named after certain personality attributes. Obstinate, Formalist, Hopeful, and Faithful are just some of them. In addition, some settings and places are named after Biblical locations, such as Mount Zion and Mount Sinai. This particular 1910 edition comes with beautiful monochromatic and highly detailed illustrations by Frank C. Pape. Christian readers definitely will enjoy reading and learning from this allegorical story more with the inclusion of Pape's images.
