"Presents the story of Arthur [Kilpin] Bulley (1861-1942), a Liverpool cotton broker in an era of Empire and exploration. With a nose for profit and a love of flowers, he paid intrepid plant hunters to scour the mountains of China and the Himalayas for alpines and hardy plants. The plant hunters became famous, new species were discovered and gardens were subsequently enriched. The text portrays Bulley as a colourful eccentric and visionary with a passion for new and rare alpine and hardy plants. It describes how he created Ness Gardens from fields and established a famous nursery, Bees Ltd, to show and promote new flowers."--

For centuries common primroses have spread breathtaking carpets of pale lemon yellow across the globe, the first sign of spring. Abundant, edible, and beneficial for many ailments, they have supported civilization’s social and cultural foundations. When undaunted plant hunters risked their lives to introduce the many Himalayan primroses of breathtaking beauty, the primrose gained iconic status. Capable of endless variation, primroses have captured the attention of gardeners, plant breeders, and scientists, while artists and poets have found them essential as both subject matter and muse. William Shakespeare introduced us to the “the primrose path,” a pleasurable but destructive route, in several of his plays, and Charles Darwin spent more than thirty years working with primroses to solve an elegant evolutionary mystery. This book tells the story of how primroses became so successful, circling the Earth, adapting to human civilization, and yet holding their own on inaccessible craggy summits where they may never be seen. Bringing together facts, folklore, and beautiful images from around the world, Primrose is a delightful guide to this hugely popular flower.

The Ingenious Mr Fairchild written by Michael Leapman and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-13 with Gardening categories.

By the early eighteenth century botanists were inching towards the shocking truth that plants had male and female organs and reproduced sexually. The first person to realize the practical implications of this was London nurseryman and author Thomas Fairchild. By transferring the pollen of a sweet William into the pistil of a carnation, he created a new plant that became known as 'Fairchild's Mule': the first man-made hybrid in Europe. But this primitive form of genetic engineering aroused a scientific and religious furore. Michael Leapman offers fascinating and colourful detail about the life and times of Fairchild, a troubled, gentle soul whose pioneering work changed the course of horticulture and paved the way for the growth of gardening as a cultural obsession. 'A beguiling perambulation around the Georgian nursery trade.' Sir Roy Strong, Daily Mail

The Paper Road written by Erik Mueggler and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-02 with Social Science categories.

This exhilarating book interweaves the stories of two early twentieth-century botanists to explore the collaborative relationships each formed with Yunnan villagers in gathering botanical specimens from the borderlands between China, Tibet, and Burma. Erik Mueggler introduces Scottish botanist George Forrest, who employed Naxi adventurers in his fieldwork from 1906 until his death in 1932. We also meet American Joseph Francis Charles Rock, who, in 1924, undertook a dangerous expedition to Gansu and Tibet with the sons and nephews of Forrest’s workers. Mueggler describes how the Naxi workers and their Western employers rendered the earth into specimens, notes, maps, diaries, letters, books, photographs, and ritual manuscripts. Drawing on an ancient metaphor of the earth as a book, Mueggler provides a sustained meditation on what can be copied, translated, and revised and what can be folded back into the earth.
