In 1971, a near-fatal automobile accident throws Izzy Monroe’s life into upheaval after she survives with a brain injury that leaves her with impaired short-term memory. Unable to complete her doctorate at Harvard, she retreats to her childhood home on Chappaquiddick Island, adrift and despairing. Her roommate, Maria Belli, confronts Izzy with a choice—sink deeper into numbing grief for her former self or find the courage to redefine who she is and what she wants for her life. Accepting Maria’s challenge, Izzy leaves the well-intentioned but suffocating concern of her family and takes a position at Portarello, a farm in Italy owned by Maria’s grandfather, Raffaello Richetelli. Although unsure of her decision, Izzy begins to find purpose and competence with her work on the land. But consumed with hiding her impairment and unwilling to risk forming bonds with anyone, she remains disconnected from others on the farm. Daniel Richetelli, Maria’s cousin and a young Jesuit priest in the midst of a deeply troubling crisis of faith, has been ordered to take a leave of absence and returns to his grandfather’s farm to find the answers he seeks. Both insomniacs, Izzy and Daniel encounter each other one night. In the presence of something Izzy does not yet understand, she finds her barriers dissolving and reaches out to Daniel. Izzy and Daniel realize they are both longing to heal themselves in a world that had once been filled with certainty and purpose; each of them recognizes in the other a soulmate and a lodestar. Finding their way back to wholeness takes them on a journey, filled with missteps and revelations, that ultimately leads them to a new understanding of themselves and each other.

A Place Of Refuge written by Tobias Jones and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-02 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Five years ago, Tobias Jones and his wife set up a woodland sanctuary for people in a period of crisis in their lives. Windsor Hill Wood quickly becomes a well-known refuge, and a family home is transformed into a small community. Most people arrive because of a desperate need - bereavement, depression, addiction or homelessness - while others come simply because they are dismayed by modern life. A Place of Refuge is the story of an evolving community: the characters and conflicts, the miracles and mistakes. As the seasons turn in the bustling woodland, an ever-changing group of people try to share their money, their meals and ideals; making furniture, growing vegetables and rearing livestock. Encountering both violent antagonism and astounding generosity, the family open up not only their house, but also themselves, to the most demanding of judgements and transformations. This book is not about a retreat from the world, but about a deeper engagement with it. Living alongside troubled guests, Jones examines the consequences of our way of life - seeing up close the scars of war, abuse and loneliness - and contemplates the ways in which nature and stillness offer solace to those in torment.

The problem of places of refuge for ships in distress is a pressing issue in maritime circles. Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress by Anthony Morrison examines the problem in the context of international and national law and analyses the remedies that have been suggested for resolving this troubling issue. The book examines places of refuge under international law, the laws of four major maritime States and the European Union. Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress analyses two proposed solutions – voluntary guidelines and a new convention. The book asserts that additional solutions are needed and examines potential alternatives. Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress is particularly useful, not only as an assessment of the specific problem, but also the wider examination of international maritime and environmental law that underpins any solution. It will serve as an essential resource to individuals involved in international, maritime and environmental law and those concerned with the threat to the environment posed by the carriage of dangerous goods by sea.

Layered Landscapes written by Eric Nelson and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-26 with History categories.

This volume explores the conceptualization and construction of sacred space in a wide variety of faith traditions: Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and the religions of Japan. It deploys the notion of "layered landscapes" in order to trace the accretions of praxis and belief, the tensions between old and new devotional patterns, and the imposition of new religious ideas and behaviors on pre-existing religious landscapes in a series of carefully chosen locales: Cuzco, Edo, Geneva, Granada, Herat, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Kanchipuram, Paris, Philadelphia, Prague, and Rome. Some chapters hone in on the process of imposing novel religious beliefs, while others focus on how vestiges of displaced faiths endured. The intersection of sacred landscapes with political power, the world of ritual, and the expression of broader cultural and social identity are also examined. Crucially, the volume reveals that the creation of sacred space frequently involved more than religious buildings and was a work of historical imagination and textual expression. While a book of contrasts as much as comparisons, the volume demonstrates that vital questions about the location of the sacred and its reification in the landscape were posed by religious believers across the early-modern world.

On Refuge written by Richard Gough and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Business & Economics categories.

A 'refuge' provides a place of safety, a place which constitutes the necessary conditions for making work. But what are the conditions of making work for the displaced, exiled or the migrant artist when the 'place' and conditions for work have (perhaps) been erased? On Refuge looks at how such altered conditions affect the work of performance and considers how performance constructs its own production and survival. The contributors address issues of territory and asylum, home and exile, locality and migration - as they affect both artists themselves and the forms evident in contemporary performance.
