Among the many examples of Russian-American émigré literature, a number of less known authors moved to the USA, following their predecessors' transnational and plurilingual experiences. The bilingual (and sometimes trilingual) expressions in their works written in English invite a contrastive analysis of their transition from their source language, Russian, to their target language, English. This book explores the linguistic structure of the autobiographies of four Russian-American writers (Cournos, Nabokov, Berberova and Shteyngart) bringing into focus the linguistic "geology" of their texts, as they record their passage from a Russian world to an English one. These linguistic passages are examined from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective, by dwelling on the geographies of the émigrés' itineraries as well as on the process of linguistic transformation that such itineraries generated. By analyzing these writers' geographic and linguistic routes, this volume engages the reader in a metalinguistic discourse and highlights the influence of these first plurilingual experiments on modern theories concerning linguistic globalization.

This collection explores Gissing’s place in the narrative of fin-de-siècle literature. Together, chapters here theorise how late-Victorian spatial and generic norms are confronted, explored and performed in Gissing’s works. In addition to presenting new readings of the major novels and introducing readers to lesser-known works, the collection advocates Gissing’s importance as a journalist, short story, and travel writer. It also recognises Gissing as a central proponent in the late-Victorian realism debate. The book, like today’s nineteenth-century studies, is interdisciplinary. It includes familiar interpretive approaches—biographical, historicist, and comparative—together with fresh perspectives informed by ecocriticism, materiality, and cultural performance. In addition, it is markedly comparative in scope. Gissing is read alongside familiar authors like Dickens, Ruskin, and Hardy, but also, and more unusually, Nietzsche, Besant, Freud and Foucault. Collectively, these chapters illustrate that Gissing, though attentive to contemporary issues, is neither uncomplicatedly realist nor are his writings uncomplicated historical records of place.

Zeit und Umstände der Gedichtentstehung, ihre thematische Kongruenz, Buchtitel, Architektonik der Bände (Reihenfolge der Gedichte, ihre Zyklisierung, Zeilenkonfiguration) sowie Kontakte zu Verlagen, Briefwechsel mit Lektoren, Druck und Ausstattung der Gedichtbände spielen dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Das für Celans Dichtung immanent eigene dialogische Prinzip realisiert sich hier auf dem Niveau verbaler, thematischer, bildlicher, struktureller »Antiphone«. Im Grunde bilden Celans Gedichte ein intertextuelles Kettengeflecht, dessen Glieder miteinander untrennbar verbunden sind. The research included in this book covers creative and production-aesthetic aspects of Paul Celan's poetry collections. They trace the author's process, from emergence of the first poetic idea to realization of the poetic message. The time and circumstances of the poems, their thematic consistency, titles, architectonics of collections (order of poems, their cyclization, configuration of poetic lines), as well as contacts with publishers, correspondence with editors, printing, and design of poetry books play an important role in this case. The dialogic principle immanent in Celan's poetry is realized here at the level of verbal, thematic, figurative, and structural "antiphons". In general, Celan's poetry collections form an intertextual chain, whose links are inseparably linked with each other.
