Fernando Pessoa (1888--1935) is perhaps the most engaging of the great Western modernists of this century. Born in Portugal but raised and educated in southern Africa, Pessoa wrote poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. George Monteiro provides refreshingly new interpretations of Pessoa's Mensagem ( Message) and the modernist novella 0 Banqueiro Anarquista ( The Anarchist Banker). But he is primarily interested in tracing Pessoa's influence on a wide range of contemporary writers. Among those Monteiro finds putting Pessoa's work to their own surprising -- and sometimes comic -- uses are Joyce Carol Oates, Allen Ginsberg, John Wain, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and earlier poets including Thomas Merton, Edouard Roditi, and Roy Campbell. In addition, the complete text of Campbell's pioneering biocritical study of Pessoa is published here for the first time.

Of the great epic poets in the Western tradition, Luis Vaz de Camões (c. 1524- 1580) remains perhaps the least known outside his native Portugal, and his influence on literature in English has not been fully recognized. In this major work of comparative scholarship, George Monteiro thus breaks new ground, focusing on English-language writers whose vision and expression have been sharpened by their varied responses to Camões. Introduced to English readers in 1655, Camões's work from the beginning appealed strongly to writers. The young Elizabeth Barrett's Camonean poems, for example, inspired Edgar Allan Poe to appropriate elements from Camões. Herman Melville's reading of Camões bore fruit in his career-long borrowings from the Portuguese poet. Longfellow, T.W. Higginson, and Emily Dickinson read and championed Camões. And Camões as epicist and love poet is an éminence grise in several of Elizabeth Bishop's strongest Brazilian poems. Southern African writers have interpreted and reinterpreted Adamastor, Camões's Spirit of the Cape, as both a symbol of a dangerous and mysterious Africa and an emblem of European imperialism. Recognizing the presence of Camões leads Monteiro to provocative rereadings of such texts as Dickinson's "Master" letters, Poe's "Raven," Melville's late poetry, and Bishop's Questions of Travel.

This is the first edited volume that tackles the acquisition of the present (tense, aspect, temporality), an under-researched area, particularly compared to the acquisition of past temporality. For more than four centuries, Macau was the centre of Portuguese trade and culture on the South China Coast. Until the founding of Hong Kong and the opening of other ports in the 1840s, it was also the main gateway to China for independent British merchants and their only place of permanent residence. Drawing extensively on Portuguese as well as British sources, The British Presence in Macau traces Anglo-Portuguese relations in South China from the first arrival of English trading ships in the 1630s to the establishment of factories at Canton, the beginnings of the opium trade, and the Macartney Embassy of 1793. The British and Portuguese—longstanding allies in the West—pursued more complex relations in the East, as trading interests clashed under a Chinese imperial system and as the British increasingly asserted their power as “a community in search of a colony”.

En las bases de la convocatoria del Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana se hace constar que el premiado recibe como parte del galardón la “edición de un volumen con una recopilación antológica de poemas del autor premiado, para divulgar su obra y sin finalidad lucrativa, que será publicado por Ediciones Universidad de Sala- manca”. Ese gran encargo, realizado por Patrimonio Nacional y la Universidad de Salamanca, comenzó en 1992 con la edición del libro Cinco visiones de Gonzalo Rojas que prologó la profesora Carmen Ruiz Barrionuevo. Mas con aquel poemario se inició una nueva etapa para Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca. En lo propiamente editorial dio origen a una colección, la Biblioteca de América, que año tras año se ha ido enriqueciendo con los títulos de los sucesivos poetas galardonados: Claudio Rodríguez, João Cabral de Melo Neto, José Hierro, Ángel González, Álvaro Mutis, José Ángel Valente, Mario Benedetti, Pere Gimferrer, Nicanor Parra, José Antonio Muñoz Rojas, Sophia de Mello, José Manuel Caballero Bonald, Juan Gelman, Antonio Gamoneda, Blanca Varela, Pablo García Baena, José Emilio Pacheco, Francisco Brines y, en esta vigésima ocasión, con la poeta cubana Fina García Marruz. Todos ellos aportaron un enorme valor a la nómina de autores que engrosan nuestro catálogo y dotaron a la colección de una relevancia literaria y editorial que mereció el reconocimiento, al ser premiada como mejor colección, de la Unión de Editoriales Universitarias Españolas (UNE) en el año 2006.
