Even though the interest in rhetoric does still not recline today and even though the orator's performance was considered the most important element of oratory in antiquity, there has been no detailed piece of research on the voice of the orator in ancient rhetoric so far. This book aims at closing this gap. To achieve this, we need a multi-faceted approach because our sources are extremely disparate, have come down to us in very different contexts and are to some part poorly transmitted. This is why our two main sources - the Auctor ad Herennium, who writes in late Republican times (1st century BC), and Quintilian (1st century AD) - have to be explained in a detailed commentary. Additionally, our shorter rhetorical texts must not be neglected and have to be complemented by texts belonging to different scientific discourses such as medicine, philosophy and grammar. Thus, this book offers two approaches. First, it presents chronologically all the relevant texts dating from the 5th century BC to the 8th century AD and explains them (chapter 2 and 3). Second, it analyses the rhetorical main sources with regard to content, grammar and style (chapter 4). Therefore, depending on the readers' interests this book can be read from a philological, a historical or an interdisciplinary perspective (chapter 5).

Universal Empire written by Peter Fibiger Bang and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-16 with History categories.

The claim by certain rulers to universal empire has a long history stretching as far back as the Assyrian and Achaemenid Empires. This book traces its various manifestations in classical antiquity, the Islamic world, Asia and Central America as well as considering seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European discussions of international order. As such it is an exercise in comparative world history combining a multiplicity of approaches, from ancient history, to literary and philosophical studies, to the history of art and international relations and historical sociology. The notion of universal, imperial rule is presented as an elusive and much coveted prize among monarchs in history, around which developed forms of kingship and political culture. Different facets of the phenomenon are explored under three, broadly conceived, headings: symbolism, ceremony and diplomatic relations; universal or cosmopolitan literary high-cultures; and, finally, the inclination to present universal imperial rule as an expression of cosmic order.

The Persistence Of Technology written by Stefan Krebs and has been published by transcript Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-30 with History categories.

Repair, reuse and disposal are closely interlinked phenomena related to the service lives and persistence of technologies. When technical artefacts become old and worn out, decisions have to be taken: is it necessary, worthwhile or even possible to maintain and repair, reuse or dismantle them - or must they be discarded? These decisions depend on factors such as the availability of second-hand markets, repair infrastructures and dismantling or disposal facilities. In telling the stories of China's power grid, Canadian telephones, German automobiles and India's shipbreaking business, among others, the contributions in this volume highlight the persistence of technologies and show that maintenance and repair are not obsolete in modern industries and consumer societies.

Phraseological Units written by D. J. Allerton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Phraseology categories.

Phraseological Units: basic concepts and their applicationPhraseology, an established concept in central and eastern Europe, has in recent years received increasing attention in the English-speaking world. It has long been clear to language learners and teachers that a native speaker's competence in a language goes well beyond a lexico-semantic knowledge of the individual words and the grammatical rules for combining them into sentences; linguistic competence also includes a familiarity with restricted collocations (like break the rules), idioms (like spill the beans in a non-literal sense) and proverbs (like Revenge is sweet), as well as the ability to produce or understand metaphorical interpretations. The first five papers of this volume set out to define the basic phraseological concepts collocation, idiom, proverb, metaphor and the related one of compound (-word). The remaining six papers explore a series of issues involving analytic, quantitative, computational and lexicographic aspects of phraseological units. The volume, as a whole, is a comprehensive and comprehensible introduction to this blossoming field of linguistics.

Space In The Roman World written by Richard J. A. Talbert and has been published by Lit Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.

How was space perceived and presented in the Roman world? While it is tempting to assume that any modern historical atlas, with its maps of "the world as the Romans saw it", gives a sufficient answer to these questions, recent research has suggested that the issue is more complex than this. To follow up such questions in more detail, the five original contributions to this volume, by leading experts from Britain, Germany, the United States, and Switzerland, discuss the tradition of scientific geography, Roman itinerary literature, and the Tabula Peutingeriana.
