Protestants have had a tradition of keeping their heads down since before Irish independence in 1922, and still have. Most of them have gone into Omertà. They had their own social networks, businesses, large manufacturing companies like Guinness and Jamieson Whiskey and schools and hospitals. But a few historians have taken the position that Southern Protestant citizenship has been indulged, rather than being a matter of right, in the Roman Catholic Gaelic state that emerged after 1921. So, we can ask, why did an estimated 42,000 leave to go to Northern Ireland, England, Australia and Canada between 1920 and 1926? In On the Margin, Robin Bury describes his lived experiences, and those of his family, as marginalized Protestants residing in Roman Catholic-controlled Southern Ireland in the twentieth century, and what it was like to be set apart, placed on the margin, despite being as Irish as their fellow Roman Catholics. The author recounts his early childhood in India in the 1940s, when his Anglican clergyman father had a post there. He describes growing up in Ireland, including his schooling at Midleton College in Co. Cork, St. Columba’s College in Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. He married an Irish Catholic woman and gives highlights of his family life. He tells of living as an expatriate in Kenya in the 1960s, where he was a teacher, and his subsequent career in export sales beginning in London, England, and then continuing largely in Ireland, apart from a brief stint in Toronto. He closes with his move in retirement to his mother’s native Canada. A self-admitted post-nationalist, Robin examines how a once vibrant and industrious ruling minority ended up being the subject of attacks and intimidation in the years following Ireland’s independence, and aspires to inform the Irish people at home and those in the diaspora about the harm that monocultural nationalism—which is spreading today in various countries—causes when people dwell on supposed past wrongs. Weaving personal accounts and gathered stories about various generations of the Bury family with a myriad of information and thoughts about the broader religious, social, and political norms of Ireland post independence, On the Margin is an engaging and candid memoir written from a rarely told Protestant perspective.

The profession of chiropractic is beset with conflicting images: a physician (as defined in many state statutes) but one who unglamorously "cracks backs." Chiropractic's history is characterized by tension between two opposite orientations: professionalism (prototype: medical physician) versus entrepreneurialism (prototype: businessman). This research traces the evolution of chiropractic and how its jurisdictional claim of expertise was shaped by myriad forces: macro social trends, interrelationships with other practitioners, strategies formulated from within chiropractic, as well as previous decisions that came to limit the availability of options. Relying on historical methodology, I describe three "episodes" of chiropractic. Like a pendulum, chiropractic initially pursued an entrepreneurial orientation in period one (1895-1961) and repudiated anything professional or medical. With the culmination of social and interprofessional pressures, chiropractic reversed its trajectory, and pursued a professionalization process in the second period of history (1961-1992). But, as quickly as professionalism was attained, the health care environment and chiropractic's role within it was altered leading eventually to the re-emergence of entrepreneurialism (1992-present). Each period of history involved ongoing attention to the specific claims being made about work and expertise in order to fit into the perceived exigencies and requirements of the health care system. While the existing literature tends to focus on more mainstream actors (physicians, hospitals) this research demonstrates that studying a profession on the margins of health care sheds new light upon the social forces (entrepreneurialism and professionalism) affecting occupations and the strategies devised to adapt to such challenges.

Working at the Margins describes and analyzes the move, from welfare rolls to paid employment, of adults who were marginalized from the mainstream by race, ethnicity, language, and economic status. Frances Julia Riemer utilizes ethnographic data gathered over two years from four workplaces that employed thirty seven former welfare recipients. She examines how the private sector accommodates these workers and their differences and how the workers themselves negotiate the barriers they experience. The book illustrates how government policies and adult-education initiatives, designed ostensibly to create opportunities, often reify existing inequalities.

One of the most influential and creative scholars in medical anthropology takes stock of his recent intellectual odysseys in this collection of essays. Arthur Kleinman, an anthropologist and psychiatrist who has studied in Taiwan, China, and North America since 1968, draws upon his bicultural, multidisciplinary background to propose alternative strategies for thinking about how, in the postmodern world, the social and medical relate. Writing at the Margin explores the border between medical and social problems, the boundary between health and social change. Kleinman studies the body as the mediator between individual and collective experience, finding that many health problems—for example the trauma of violence or depression in the course of chronic pain—are less individual medical problems than interpersonal experiences of social suffering. He argues for an ethnographic approach to moral practice in medicine, one that embraces the infrapolitical context of illness, the responses to it, the social institutions relating to it, and the way it is configured in medical ethics. In texts from the mid-Heian to the early Kamakura periods, certain figures appear to be "marginal" or removed from "centers" of power. But why do we see these figures in this way? This study first seeks to answer this question by examining the details of the marginalizing discourse found in these texts. Who is portraying whom as marginal? For what reason? Is the discourse consistent? The author next considers these texts in terms of the predilection of modern scholarship, both Japanese and Western, to label certain figures "marginal." She then poses the question: Is this predilection a helpful tool or does it inscribe modern biases and misconceptions onto these texts?

Traditionally, American educators and communities have looked to Europe and Asia for ideas for rethinking and reforming education for America’s diverse children. This book, Contemporary Voices from the Margin: African Educators on African and American Education, brings together new voices of diverse African-born teacher educators and Africanist scholars who share personal experiences as well as researchbased perspectives about education in Africa and America that will be valuable to rethinking and reforming education for America’s struggling schools. The book is a comprehensive work of experienced educators and scholars in the field of teacher education and African Studies. The editors of the book invited a diverse group of African-born teacher educators and scholars from different countries of Africa who teach in the U.S. The contributors share a common African experience, but they are geographically diverse in countries of origin and research. Their knowledge about African communal living as well as colonial powers and imperialism as they operated in various African countries enables them to compare and contrast various educational models and practices, including traditional ones. They are also diverse in their fields of specialization but have expertise in multicultural education, urban education, and culturally responsive pedagogy that have become the focus of U.S. discourses in public education and teacher preparation programs. Given that these scholars were born or socialized, and educated in, as well as, taught schools and colleges in their respective African countries before settling in the United States, they bring a wealth of experience and insights into what it means to successfully educate children and youth. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 examines African processes and practices of education, both formal and informal, as contributing authors share perspectives about African indigenous education including cultural socialization and formal western-type education and organization of schools. Part 2 focuses on patterns and structures of formal, western-type education in selected African countries. Part 3 explores cross-cultural perspectives on American education. The contributors provide chapters of stimulating and rich perspectives that will engage the discourse on rethinking and reforming education and schooling for America’s diverse students.
