The following chapter provides a brief introduction to the structure of the public sector as well as to some of the principles upon which social and health policy in Denmark are based. Chapter 3 presents an account of the development of life expectancy in Denmark and of the proposals that have been made for its improvement. The latter encompass, at the same time, strategies for achieving some of the thirty-eight health targets formulated by WHO. The general aims of the Social Development Programme are introduced and some of the outcomes upon which evaluation of the programme has focused are presented. The final chapter of this booklet offers brief accounts of four local development projects, the initiation of which was funded by the social development programme.
