¿Qué significa el éxito en filosofía? Con esta pregunta como punto de partida, A propósito de las causas perdidas: escepticismo y conciencia histórica recorre los avatares de la teoría y la tipología de las concepciones del mundo formuladas por Wilhelm Dilthey en 1911. Inspirado en la perspectiva escéptica de Odo Marquard, el libro muestra que todo intento de lograr una filosofía exitosa en virtud de una justificación absoluta redunda siempre en una causa perdida. Ejemplos de ello fueron la teodicea, la filosofía de la historia y la misma tipología de las concepciones del mundo. ¿Qué hacer con la filosofía cuando de esta se siguen tantos fracasos? La transformación de la pregunta filosófica que va tras la exigencia de una justificación absoluta en una pregunta surgida de la necesidad de orientar las propias experiencias parece brindar una buena respuesta; quizás no la mejor, pero una adecuada para la vida humana. Los trabajos en torno al escepticismo en la obra de Dilthey son muy pocos, incluso en lengua alemana, y Marquard no ha sido estudiado como comentarista de la obra de Dilthey, lo que hace de A propósito de las causas perdidas: escepticismo y conciencia histórica no solo un planteamiento innovador, sino que pretende suplir, someramente, un vacío que existe en la literatura en español en torno a los dos filósofos. Mediante la traducción directa de citas y fragmentos del alemán, que no están disponibles en lengua española o inglesa, el libro presenta una lectura filosófica orientada a abrir una nueva ventana de trabajo en la recepción de la filosofía de Dilthey, esta vez desde una óptica escéptica.
