"Buddhist monasteries, in both Ancient India and China, have played a crucial social role, for religious as well as for lay people. They rightfully attract the attention of many scholars, discussing historical backgrounds, institutional networks, or influential maters. Still, some aspects of monastic life have not yet received the attention they deserve. This book therefore aims to study some of the most essential, but often overlooked, issues of Buddhist life: namely, practices and objects of bodily care. For monastic authors, bodily care primarily involves bathing, washing, cleaning, shaving and triming the nails, activities of everyday life that are performed by lay people and moastics alike. In this sense, they are all highly recognizable and, while structuring monastic life, equally provide a potential bridge between two worlds that are constantly interacting with each other: monastic people and their lay followers. Bodily practices might by viewed as relatiely simple and elementary, but it is exactly through their triviality that they give us a clear insight into the structure and development of Buddhist monasteries. Over time, Buddhist monks and nuns have, through their painstaking effort into regulating bodily care, defined the identity of Buddhist saòmgha, overtly displaying it to the laity"--P. Mahayana, Theravada, ancient, modern? Even at the most basic level, the diversity of Buddhism makes a comprehensive approach daunting. This book is a first step in solving the problem. In foregrounding the bodies of practitioners, a solid platform for analysing the philosophy of Buddhism begins to become apparent. Building upon somaesthetics Buddhism is seen for its ameliorative effect, which spans the range of how the mind integrates with the body. This exploration of positive effect spans from dreams to medicine. Beyond the historical side of these questions, a contemporary analysis includes its intersection with art, philosophy, and ethnography.

Cleanliness is next to enlightenment. In this Japanese bestseller a Buddhist monk explains the traditional cleaning techniques that will help cleanse not only your house - but your soul. 'We remove dust to sweep away our worldly desires. We scrub dirt to free ourselves of attachments. We live simply and take time to contemplate the self, mindfully living each moment. It's not just monks that need to live this way. Everyone in today's busy world today needs it. The Zen sect of Buddhism is renowned for the cleanliness of its monks, but cleaning is greatly valued in Japanese Buddhism in general as a way to cultivate the mind. In this book, I introduce everyday cleaning methods typically employed in temples, while sharing what it's like to be a monk in training. This book will improve the condition not just of your own mind, but also the people around you. I hope readers will discover that cleanliness is an opportunity to contemplate oneself.'

Today man lives quite well. He takes full care of the cleanliness of his body, everyday he bathes, wears clean clothes, keeps his surroundings clean. But what about the mind? In this whole sequence, we are forgetting the mind. Wouldn't it be dirty? If you look into someone's mind, you will see more dirt there than a dirty drain. This book envisions a mind that is a storehouse of unnecessary and dirty thoughts. This mind is disturbed by its own thoughts. It wanders every day in search of happiness in this world, but even after many efforts, it does not get that happiness. Because it doesn't know anything about happiness, what is it? It has been misguided by our social teachers. In this book you will see how the society is spreading drugs among the youth? And how can you keep yourself away from it? This is the first part of 'Purity of Mind' which is the introductory journey of that path.

A revelatory account of how Christian monks identified distraction as a fundamental challenge—and how their efforts to defeat it can inform ours, more than a millennium later. The digital era is beset by distraction, and it feels like things are only getting worse. At times like these, the distant past beckons as a golden age of attention. We fantasize about escaping our screens. We dream of recapturing the quiet of a world with less noise. We imagine retreating into solitude and singlemindedness, almost like latter-day monks. But although we think of early monks as master concentrators, a life of mindfulness did not, in fact, come to them easily. As historian Jamie Kreiner demonstrates in The Wandering Mind, their attempts to stretch the mind out to God—to continuously contemplate the divine order and its ethical requirements—were all-consuming, and their battles against distraction were never-ending. Delving into the experiences of early Christian monks living in the Middle East, around the Mediterranean, and throughout Europe from 300 to 900 CE, Kreiner shows that these men and women were obsessed with distraction in ways that seem remarkably modern. At the same time, she suggests that our own obsession is remarkably medieval. Ancient Greek and Roman intellectuals had sometimes complained about distraction, but it was early Christian monks who waged an all-out war against it. The stakes could not have been higher: they saw distraction as a matter of life and death. Even though the world today is vastly different from the world of the early Middle Ages, we can still learn something about our own distractedness by looking closely at monks’ strenuous efforts to concentrate. Drawing on a trove of sources that the monks left behind, Kreiner reconstructs the techniques they devised in their lifelong quest to master their minds—from regimented work schedules and elaborative metacognitive exercises to physical regimens for hygiene, sleep, sex, and diet. She captures the fleeting moments of pure attentiveness that some monks managed to grasp, and the many times when monks struggled and failed and went back to the drawing board. Blending history and psychology, The Wandering Mind is a witty, illuminating account of human fallibility and ingenuity that bridges a distant era and our own.

A Zen Buddhist perspective on the universal flow of cosmic energy and how to incorporate that energy into one's life and spiritual practice--from one of the most revered figures in American Zen. The universe is alive with a dynamic energy that creates and sustains our lives. It surrounds us, flows through us, and is available to us in every moment. Spiritual practice, according to Dainin Katagiri Roshi, is about aligning ourselves with this ever-present life force--sometimes referred to as chi, qi, or ki. This collection, edited from his talks, focuses on cosmic energy as it relates to all aspects of Zen practice. With references to classic texts and personal stories that bring the teachings to life, The Light That Shines through Infinity is also a powerful antidote to the notion that practice is in some way about transcending the world around us. It is in fact about nothing other than relating to it compassionately and whole-heartedly.

What ails us? Why are we unhappy? Why do we suffer? The Upanishads call us Amritasya Putrah, scions of immortality. But we struggle to be happy. Why is it so? Where are we going wrong? This is because we do not know how to conduct ourselves in this world. Though we are endowed with divine virtues we do not practise it. Ignorance about Self has enveloped our intellect. Though we are born to be blissful we lead a life of misery. Our thought process is very important in this regard. When we think of something, we become the object of thought. Sadguru Sri Sri Arjn says, "Ignorance is the cause of sufferings." Ignorance leads to desire; desire leads to wrongdoings which leads to suffering. This book is a compilation of some of the spiritual discourses of Sadguru Sri Sri Arjun. He is the founder of Divya Darshan-The Philosophy Divine. Divya Darshan lays stress on living harmoniously in society by practising divine virtues and learning about Self to know one’s true nature. Sadguru Sri Sri Arjun says, “You never welcome woes but your ignorance brings them to you. You are absolutely divine. Therefore, pursue divine knowledge, desire only divinity, contemplate on divinity and then only divine bliss will be bestowed upon you.” He further says, "Knowledge paves the way to Dharma and Dharma to freedom (moksha).” Elucidating further he explains, "Knowing the Law of Eternity is knowledge and observance of the same is Dharma. Without self-knowledge it is impossible to attain bliss and freedom, the ultimate goal of everyone.”
