"A new dual reaction control system provides the means for flight research on the requirements for VTOL attitude control systems. There are two conflicting requirements for any control system used in flight research. One is flexibility and the other is safety. Maximum flexibility can best be achieved by an electrically driven control system, but this frequently degrades safety. Maximum safety is provided by a mechanical control system. But this type system is difficult to change or adjust. Pilots consider their safety is not endangered if it is possible to switch from an electrical drive system to a mechanical drive system in about 0.1 sec after an electrical failure. The new dual reaction control system satisfies this requirement with a fail safe air switching system that controls 8.5 lb-m/sec of 500° F air. The research control system is an electrical drive system. The air switching concept set the requirement for large reaction control nozzles to handle the required air flow without excessive losses. Large nozzles, however, require large driving torques, although some nozzle types have lower driving torque requirements than others. An experimental determination was made for several reaction nozzle concepts to find the type with the lowest torque requirement. An outside can-type was devised that had sufficiently low driving torques (290 in.-oz for 60 psig air using a 3 sq in. exit area) so that a low power and low weight servomotor could be used and still achieve high response. It was also found that additional lift could be developed by a variation in this type nozzle. The combination of concepts of a rapid switching valve and a low torque nozzle permit maximum flexibility in system design of reaction attitude control systems for jet VTOL research aircraft."--P. Several performance criteria methods for optimizing a prefilter model reference control system are reviewed, and the quadratic performance index is studied in detail. The prefilter model reference system consisted of a second-order model and a fourth-order follower. The form of this follower system was typical of that required for a VTOL aircraft in hover (e.g., the X-14B). For the VTOL problem, the quadratic performance index was found to be the most versatile and comprehensive criterion. A system designer can iterate weighting matrices for various system states until the desired system response is obtained; that is, if the response is too oscillatory, the elements of the weighting matrices can be changed to produce a less oscillatory response. A major advantage of the quadratic performance index is that it can be minimized through the use of readily available digital computer programs. The solution of these programs provides a set of optimal gains for a given system configuration and the chosen configuration. Constraints on the use of the quadratic performance index are that the index must be expressed in terms of states and the control vector, all stales must be observable, and only linear system formulations are acceptable.
