This book is about going above-and-beyond for your boss, your employer, your employees and the public, your customer. This was the order of the day at the Clayton Solicitor General's Office. Although on any given day or moment we had to wear many hats to help the public, it was the synergy amongst the employees that made us dynamic. How common it is to hear the expression: "Look out for No.1!" or to see the "me first attitude." However, during my years at the Clayton Solicitor General's office I noticed heroes who exemplified the very opposite. For example, have you ever had a boss that thought you deserved the benefits of retirement? Maybe there was a team that came together to encourage and support you without your request? What about the boss that values you so much he or she rewards you with an afternoon off or a reward of your choice? What about a manager that is such a good leader, she welcomes you to the office with open arms, fills in all blanks every step of the way, never removing herself as your cheerleader and friend? What about the boss that thought you were capable of so much more? These are just a few of the special people I had the privilege of working with for over 12 years. Interestingly, you can find all of them in an unlikely place, a government office. I dedicate this book to them out of a heart full of appreciation. Book Review As a hard-working single woman in a male dominated field, it's quite challenging to receive ongoing praise for your dedication and contribution to the job. Very few of my employers were my personal cheerleaders or asked for my personal contribution to a project or solution to a problem. The few that were, are my personal outstanding leaders and the ONLY jobs that I looked forward to going to, with full knowledge that I was going to face another stressful day. This book is a self-help book for the "how to be a great employer" and for the employee who should never be overlooked or unappreciated. Some of my personal leaders are mentioned by name in this book and I feel that they are worthy of emulating, honor and praise. Talya N. Blazia, Bilingual Court Interpreter [email protected]

Raid on Innocence In the years before the Civil War began, the small town of Salinas, Indiana was starting a period of growth that could turn this farming community into a small city. The driving force behind the growth was the combined effort of two hard-working farmers with a vision to make Salinas one of the major cities in southern Indiana. William Consley raised and trained quality saddle, team, and workhorses for most of the farmers and businessmen in the northern half of the county. He always had 30 to 40 horses on his 300-acre farm but could sometimes have as many as 10 additional that were being trained. Andrew Davis had an expanding cattle business that reached out to support other businesses in the community. His 1000 acres could support over 500 head of cattle that he sent to the slaughterhouse in town, and then sent the hides to the tan yard to be made into leather. The ice harvesting he did in the winter allowed his beef to be shipped back east to market. All of his businesses provided employment for a large portion of the citizens of the community and encouraged an influx of more settlers to the town. There weren't any citizens who had a stake in the slavery issue even though most of them still had strong ties to relatives in the south. When war does break out, only a few young men volunteer to go in the Army, either North or South. The community makes every attempt to avoid the war until the war came to them. What happens that day will surprise and shock you and will explain what becomes of the town afterwards.

Although it is on occasion important and useful to distinguish between factual claims and value judgments, the distinction becomes, Hilary Putnam argues, positively harmful when identified with a dichotomy between the objective and the purely "subjective."".

The typical American spends 80,000 to 100,000 of his or her best hours at work. For many, those hours are spent without a sense of purpose, meaning, or passion. But it doesn't have to be that way. For followers of Jesus, work is not just something we have to do. It's an opportunity to enter into deep participation in the life and work of the living God--a vital, unique, and powerful dimension of an abundant life in Christ. But many followers of Christ are uninformed or misinformed when it comes to what the Bible teaches about work. Through extensive research, consulting, mentoring, and interviewing, co-authors Thomas Addington and Stephen Graves have found that few followers of Jesus realize how much the Bible has to say about all the decisions, dilemmas, deals, and duties inherent in everyday work. From handling change to handling trauma, from creating a strategic plan to managing a staff dispute, from establishing travel policies to dealing with a dishonest supervisor, biblical truth is relevant, applicable, and discernable in workplace issues. The Fourth Frontier is for you if you're longing to: Understand God's personal calling for your life. Experience a sense of satisfaction and a God-connection to your job. Use your God-given skills for His kingdom while you're at work. Feel passion, peace, and purpose about your time between 8 and 5. Avoid the fears and anxieties that strangle joy for most employees. Create a supportive synergy between your family and your work life. Feel balance in all areas of your life. Followers of Jesus need not live fragmented, imbalanced, frenetic lives of conflicting demands and polarized priorities. Embark on a journey into The Fourth Frontier and embark on a journey of learning what it means to live a Christ-centered life of devotion, integrity, stewardship, and rest-and learning to be salt and light in the workplace and the world.
