Construction of a new refined theory of anisotropic shells not involv-ing the widely held assumption that the normal displacement is inde- pendent of the coordinate of the normal to the middle surface. It is shown that, in contrast to all other refined theories of the class considered, the proposed geometrical model of shell deformation is such that all the displacement components at a given point on the shell depend nonlinearly on the above mentioned coordinate. These two-partition books present essential approaches to numerical-analytical solutions of problems in the mechanics of shells with various structures and shapes based on refined and spatial models. Further, it examines the mechanical behavior of shallow, circular and noncircular, conical, spherical, and functionally graded shells obtained by the refined model. The book investigates the stress-strain state and free vibrations of finite-length cylinders in spatial formulation (3D elasticity theory). Further, it analyzes the influence of geometrical and mechanical parameters, of boundary conditions, and of the loading character on both the distributions of stress and displacement fields, and on the dynamical characteristics in these shells and cylinders. This brief book presents solutions of stress-strain problems for a wide class of anisotropic inhomogeneous shells obtained by the refined model. Studying these problems results in severe computational difficulties due to partial differential equations with variable coefficients resulting from the constitutive relations of the original model. To solve this problem the book uses spline-collocation and discrete-orthogonalization methods. It analyses the influence of geometrical and mechanical parameters, of various kinds of boundary conditions, and of the loading conditions on the distributions of stress and displacement fields in shallow, spherical, conical, and noncircular cylindrical shells. The dependence of the stress-strain pattern on shell thickness variations is studied. The authors solve the problem also for the case of the thickness varying in two directions. They study how a variation in shell thickness influences the stress-strain state and consider noncircular cylindrical shells with elliptical and corrugated sections are considered. The results obtained during numerous calculations support the efficiency of the discrete-orthogonalization approach proposed in the monograph for solving static problems for anisotropic inhomogeneous shells when using the refined model.

A consistent theory for thin anisotropic layered structures is developed starting from asymptotic analysis of 3D equations in linear elasticity. The consideration is not restricted to the traditional boundary conditions along the faces of the structure expressed in terms of stresses, originating a new type of boundary value problems, which is not governed by the classical Kirchhoff-Love assumptions. More general boundary value problems, in particular related to elastic foundations are also studied.The general asymptotic approach is illustrated by a number of particular problems for elastic and thermoelastic beams and plates. For the latter, the validity of derived approximate theories is investigated by comparison with associated exact solution. The author also develops an asymptotic approach to dynamic analysis of layered media composed of thin layers motivated by modeling of engineering structures under seismic excitation.

The main purpose of this work is construction of the mathematical theory of elastic plates and shells, by means of which the investigation of basic boundary value problems of the spatial theory of elasticity in the case of cylindrical do mains reduces to the study of two-dimensional boundary value problems (BVP) of comparatively simple structure. In this respect in sections 2-5 after the introductory material, methods of re duction, known in the literature as usually being based on simplifying hypotheses, are studied. Here, in contradiction to classical methods, the problems, connected with construction of refined theories of anisotropic nonhomogeneous plates with variable thickness without the assumption of any physical and geometrical re strictions, are investigated. The comparative analysis of such reduction methods was carried out, and, in particular, in section 5, the following fact was established: the error transition, occuring with substitution of a two-dimensional model for the initial problem on the class of assumed solutions is restricted from below. Further, in section 6, Vekua's method of reduction, containing regular pro cess of study of three-dimensional problem, is investigated. In this direction, the problems, connected with solvability, convergence of processes, and construction of effective algorithms of approximate solutions are studied.
