Background + objective Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common commensal in the nasopharynx, with high prevalence in young children which subsequently declines with age. Carriage is asymptomatic and is an essential precursor to mucosal and invasive pneumococcal infections. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) prevent nasopharyngeal acquisition of vaccine serotypes and reduce carriage density, generating indirect protection, but also allow increased carriage of non-vaccine serotypes. Published carriage studies undertaken in the UK were reviewed to synthesise findings and identify areas requiring further investigation. Methods Publications were identified through a PubMed search using u201cStreptococcus pneumoniaeu201d OR u201cpneumococcalu201d AND u201ccarriageu201d as search terms and also from a review of bibliographies/references from relevant articles. The search was primarily restricted to citations concerning data from the UK, though articles from a wider geographic scope and epidemiological significance relevant to carriage of the pneumococcus were included to support discussion. Learning points/discussion 27 articles were identified describing studies from the 1950s to 2017. Most were conducted in small local populations in southern England focussing on children aged 1-10yrs. PCVs reduced carriage of vaccine serotypes but overall carriage prevalence appears stable.Published carriage data in UK infants are particularly limited and reflect the pre-PCV era only. These indicate considerable carriage acquisition occurs during the first six months of life with significant exposure to circulating pneumococci. Carriage data in the elderly are also lacking. There is a need for contemporary carriage studies in UK infants to better understand the current probability of their exposure to vaccine type pneumococci, particularly given the recent interest in reducing the number of infant priming doses from two to one in the UK.More extensive longitudinal studies in larger geographic regions of the UK covering all ages using standardized methodologies are required.

Improved housing conditions can save lives, prevent disease, increase quality of life, reduce poverty, and help mitigate climate change. Housing is becoming increasingly important to health in light of urban growth, ageing populations and climate change. The WHO Housing and health guidelines bring together the most recent evidence to provide practical recommendations to reduce the health burden due to unsafe and substandard housing. Based on newly commissioned systematic reviews, the guidelines provide recommendations relevant to inadequate living space (crowding), low and high indoor temperatures, injury hazards in the home, and accessibility of housing for people with functional impairments. In addition, the guidelines identify and summarize existing WHO guidelines and recommendations related to housing, with respect to water quality, air quality, neighbourhood noise, asbestos, lead, tobacco smoke and radon. The guidelines take a comprehensive, intersectoral perspective on the issue of housing and health and highlight co-benefits of interventions addressing several risk factors at the same time. The WHO Housing and health guidelines aim at informing housing policies and regulations at the national, regional and local level and are further relevant in the daily activities of implementing actors who are directly involved in the construction, maintenance and demolition of housing in ways that influence human health and safety. The guidelines therefore emphasize the importance of collaboration between the health and other sectors and joint efforts across all government levels to promote healthy housing. The guidelines' implementation at country-level will in particular contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals on health (SDG 3) and sustainable cities (SDG 11). WHO will support Member States in adapting the guidelines to national contexts and priorities to ensure safe and healthy housing for all.

This volume looks at the newest methods, materials, equipment, and technologies developed to study the cell biology of the pneumococcus. The chapters, which cover a wide range of topics, are organized into six parts: Part one discusses the cultivation of Streptococcus pneumoniae in vitro; Part Two talks about the microscopy techniques used to study the biology of Streptococcus pneumoniae and pneumococcal interactions with the host; Parts Three and Four describe the genetics, proteome, and proteomics of Streptococcus pneumoniae; Part Five explains in vitro and in vivo models of Streptococcus pneumoniae-host interactions; and Part Six looks at the factors of public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and authoritative, Streptococcus pneumoniae: Methods and Protocols is a valuable resource for both novice and expert researchers who want to expand their studies into new areas and new systems in this continuously evolving field.

This report presents the recommendations of a WHO Expert Committee commissioned to coordinate activities leading to the adoption of international recommendations for the production and control of vaccines and other biologicals and the establishment of international biological reference materials. The report starts with a discussion of general issues brought to the attention of the Committee and provides information on the status and development of reference materials for various antibodies, antigens, blood products and related substances, cytokines, growth factors, endocrinological substances and in vitro diagnostic devices. The second part of the report, of particular relevance to manufacturers and national regulatory authorities, contains revised WHO recommendations for production and control of live attenuated influenza vaccines and for production and control of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. New WHO guidelines on the regulatory evaluation of similar biotherapeutic medicines are also provided. Also included are a list of recommendations, guidelines and other documents for biological substances used in medicine, and of international standards and reference reagent for biological substances.
