This collection provides an overview of some of the most relevant concepts in the study of the language of inclusion and exclusion, specifically with a view to the functioning of nation-state categories. Categorizations, words, and phrases are constantly renewed with the intention to exclude (mostly) or to include (rarely), promulgating problematizations that highlight discursive distinctions between in-groups and out-groups. Such discursive constructions and the practices through which they are effectuated are sites of symbolic power, and their study reveals the workings of power. Historical analysis of the language of inclusion and exclusion can help elucidate contemporary transformations of discursive power. The chapters in this volume discuss forms of discursive problematization such as defining, claiming, legitimizing, expanding, sensationalization and suggestion, and it connects these to the discursive drawing of boundaries, focusing on discursive constructions of ‘illegality’, race, class, gender, immigrant integration and transnationalism. As state categorizations continuously differ, both the historical analysis of their genesis, functioning and transformation, and the contemporary analysis of their practical effectuation are crucial to an understanding of inclusion and exclusion. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

This volume of essays, situated at the interface between legal doctrine and legal and political philosophy, discusses the conceptual and normative issues posed by the right to inclusion and exclusion the EU claims for itself when enacting and enforcing immigration and asylum policy under the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. In particular, the essays probe how this alleged right acquires institutional form; how the enactment and enforcement of the EU's external borders render possible and undermine the claim to such a right; and how the fundamental distinctions that underpin this alleged right, such as inside/outside and citizen/alien, are being disrupted and reconfigured in ways that might render the EU's civic and territorial boundaries more porous. The volume is divided into three parts. A first set of essays delves into the empirical aspects that define the institutional context of the EU's alleged jus includendi et excludendi. A second set of essays is theoretical in character, and critically scrutinizes the basic distinctions that govern this alleged right. This book analyses and discusses the multiple dimensions of social exclusion/inclusion seen in South Asia. It not only captures how ‘social exclusion’ is intrinsic to deprivation or deprivation in itself, but also the processes of political engagement and social interactions that the socially excluded develop as strategies and networks for their advancement. Consequently, the book goes beyond structures or agency, and examines the question of a more dynamic approach to provide spaces for the ‘socially excluded’ to self-manage exclusion, thereby raising discussions around the contested positions that underlie development discourse on social inequality. While social exclusion linked to identities is studied, the book argues that hierarchies and inequalities based on social identities cut across and affect various groups of excluded. Consequently, these phenomena create or lead to various processes of exclusion. The book illustrates that social exclusion should not be limited to privileging the differences that characterize the exclusionary processes, but should also comprise underpinning strategies of ‘inclusion’, emphasizing the need to focus on imperatives ‘to include’. This book offers insight on the politics of inclusion in Vietnam through a Foucauldian and post-colonial perspective on disability and education. Drawing on a socio-historical analysis of the inclusion of disabled people in Vietnam in the twenty-first century, the book guides readers through a ‘history of the present.’ By reflecting on the treatment of disabled people in Vietnamese social history, the book argues that this journey to inclusion calls for critical reflections on the challenges and possibilities for policies to transform exclusion for disabled people. The book unveils the problematics of social and educational institutions in governing disability and difference through a critical reflection on discourses and power in the global and local juncture, in relation to its engagement with disability in the global South. The intersection between the global politics of disability rights and development and the local politics of inclusion in Vietnam shapes the cultural politics of education. The ways inclusive education is historically constructed, within this socio-historical condition, reflects the challenges of inclusive thought and action for transforming injustice. Going beyond ‘deconstructive politics,’ The Journey to Inclusion argues for a re-positioning of the relationships between the global North and South as an alternative approach to inclusion. It suggests that critical research must construct a politics of engagement with subjugated voices and representations in transnational, national, and local contexts. A reflexive, critical, and inclusive dialogue that engages with Southern knowledge offers a political platform for reframing justice in the twenty-first century.
