Entranced by tales heard in her childhood of the settling of Northern Ontario, Helene Brodeur returned to chronicle those events in interviews with surviving pioneers. Against these memories of ice and fire, Brodeur weaves the love story of a British girl and a young French Canadian bound for the priesthood. This saga reaches a stunning climax with the Cochrane-Matheson forest fire of 1916.

The author moves into the 1940s and 1950s to describe the rise of Donald Stewart, son of Rose Brent and Alexandre Sellier, to the rank of cabinet minister in the federal government. He marries to advance his political career, leaving his childhood friend, Rose-Delima, who has always loved him, on the periphery of his life. Rose-Delima's brother, Germain, a northern Ontario businessman, is initiated into the secret Order of Jacques Cartier, open only to French Catholics. Donald, as Minister of External Relations, travels to Africa, and at his mother's request, looks for Father Alexandre Sellier who has devoted his life to his African mission, unaware that he has a son. SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2021 SPEAKER'S BOOK AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE 2021 TORONTO BOOK AWARD “[A] deeply moving memoir...[and] lyrical story.... Suffused with poetic prose that jumps off the page, this inspiring account sings.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) Raised by his indomitable grandmother in the lush rainforest of southern Trinidad, Antonio Michael Downing, at age 11, is uprooted to Canada when she dies. He and his older brother are sent to live with his stern, evangelical Aunt Joan, in a tiny northern Ontario community where they are the only Black children in the town. In this wilderness, after a disappointing reunion with his birth parents, he begins his journey as an immigrant minority, using music and performance to dramatically transform himself. He tries to flee his messy family life by morphing into a series of extravagant musical personalities: “Mic Dainjah,” a punk rock rapper, “Molasses,” a soul music crooner and finally “John Orpheus,” a gold chained, sequin- and leather-clad pop star. Yet, like his father and grandfather, he has become a “Saga Boy,” a Trinidadian playboy, addicted to escapism, attention, and sex. When the inevitable crash happens, he finds himself in a cold, stone jail cell, having become everything he was trying to escape. At the heart of his odyssey is the longing for a home. Richly evocative, Saga Boy is a heart-wrenching but uplifting story of a lonely immigrant boy who overcomes adversity and abandonment to reclaim his Black identity and embrace a rich heritage.

Excerpt from Pine Lake: A Story of Northern Ontario I soon learned that neither she nor her husband ever entered a church door except on some special occasion - nothing short of a funeral being sufficient to tempt them thither. The younger members of the family attended church and Sabbath-school regularly, more because their associates did so than from any home influence. Religion was evidently a very minor consideration in this family, and I, as a very babe in Christ, felt the change from the sweet Christian atmosphere of my home very keenly. There was Sunday-school in the school-house every Sunday morning at ten o'clock, and shortly after breakfast we were on our way thither. Don kept up a pleasant conversation until we reached the steps of the plain little wooden building, and then we hurried in, for the last line of th opening hymn was being sung. The superintendent's voice was saying Let us pray as we filed up the aisle between the two rows of seats.
