Excerpt from A Scholar of His College Put in some old fossil, argued the other; make him as good as you like - too good to last long. There are plenty of them about. Then, as Lord Leuchars shook his head, he continued in a louder and more angry tone, Then you really mean to tell me, Leuchars, that after I have taken all the trouble and spent I don't know what on that young rascal's education, sending him to Oxford to waste his time and my money, just because I relied on your word, mark you, you intend to throw him overboard at the last minute and let him go to the devil his own way, simply and solely because you have got hold of some d - d silly, sentimental, idiotical, conscientious scruple. When a man takes the trouble to employ some half-dozen adjectives, and furthermore to accentuate each one of them by thumping the table with his fist, he is clearly on the high road to substitute invective for argument. It was perhaps unfortunate that Lord Leuchars did not then and there drop the discussion, leaving with the other the barren advantage of having had the last word, instead of trying to impart a new tone to the conversation by the introduction of a harmless joke. Come, come, my dear fellow, he expostulated, it's not quite so bad as all that. A good education is never entirely thrown away, and we will hope that my friend Dick will not waste either his time or money at Oxford. He could not have wasted his time at school or he would never have got that scholarship. No, no, the lad is a good lad and a clever lad, a gentleman every inch of him, and a downright steady and safe shot. But after all, my dear Loder, as you admit, there is not much of the parson about him as yet. Capital good fellow and all that, with plenty of pluck and nerve, but upon my honour, if one comes to think of it, he has less of the parson about him at present than of the gamekeeper. Excerpt from A History of Classical Scholarship It is a pleasure to conclude this preface by offering the tribute of my thanks to all who in any way have helped towards the completion of what has unavoidably proved a very laborious undertaking. My gratitude is due, in the first place, to the Syndics of the University Press, and to the staff of the same. Excerpt from The University of Cambridge, in the Eighteenth Century His virtues, however, have perished with him and he has come down in history with a sorry and tarnished reputation. It is popularly believed that he was lazy and self-indulgent; but there is good reason to think that his failings have been exaggerated. Though Cam bridge in the eighteenth century was sadly lacking in eminent mathematiciansl, it was not wanting in great classical scholars; and a century of university history which can boast of Bentley, Porson, Dawes and Mark land may be accounted to have paid its debt and more than its debt to classical scholarship. It can of course be contended that scholars of such merit were rare, that they were the exception rather than the rule, and that to derive from them the standard of industry prevailing in the university is to argue from the particular to the general; but, inasmuch as it is the inevitable conse quence of the progress of learning that the greater part of the work of one generation is superseded by the next, and that only a comparatively few students are remembered for all time, it is particularly necessary to be cautious of assuming that idleness must have been almost universal because the proofs of industry are not very obvious. It is true that research was not quite so much the order of the day as it is at present; but the claims of learning and scholarship were certainly not completely disregarded. No one now troubles to in vestigate the high dusty shelves of college libraries on which repose the volumes on philosophy, divinity. Excerpt from The Commencement Annual, 1893 Saint Paul was the scholar of the college of the apostles. He was doubtless inferior in mere scholastic learning to many of the contemporary Greeks. But among the Jewish students at Jerusalem he apparently enjoyed a pro-eminence, which destined him to high official position in the Jewish church. Perhaps we rarely think of him as a scholar, certainly not as a recluse buried in his books. If we think of him at all as a scholar, it is as the scholar in action, as the scholar who is transforming all his intellectual, as well as all his moral power, into vital force with which to lift men up to a purer and nobler life. Just because he was such a man, just because he resisted the temptation to seek that ecclesiastical preferment which his talent and learning entitled him to expect in the church of his fathers, just because, when he heard the command of God, he renounced all the brilliant prospects before him and gave himself to a life of the most intense activity in raising men to a higher moral and spiritual plane, just because of all this it is that his example is so inspiring and helpful to young scholars of all time, and especially to the scholars of our time. You, who are now about to leave us, are probably without exception looking forward to a life of action. You expect to touch men's souls and to help Shape their lives. I do not doubt that you desire and hope to aid' in lifting men to higher levels of purpose and endeavor. I have thought therefore that on this occasion we might well attempt to draw out from the character and career of St. Paul some lessons for the American scholar. Excerpt from The American College, in American Life I have believed, and still believe, that through the securing of this double purpose the college may be able to be a richer blessing to this great life of which the college is a part, and which it is set to serve. No book of a kind such as this can make any pretence of being complete. This volume includes the consideration of only a few of the more vital questions. Other questions, quite as vital possibly, I hope to be able to discuss in other volumes. For the American college, like American life or the life of any progressive people, is full of infinite suggestions appealing to thought or to action. Excerpt from The American Scholar Into this volume have been collected a number of Theodore Parker's more scholarly and critical essays, originally published in the various reviews with which he was connected in one or another capacity. To these have been added three or four studies of great preachers. The title of the initial essay, at first used as a college address, has been thought an appropriate one for the whole volume. The essays on Follen, Beecher, and Macaulay have not before been reprinted from the reviews in which they first appeared. That on Dr. F ollen was printed in The Dial, and was the first of Parker's remarkable series of character studies. As the work of a young man it will be found worthy to lead the way to the studies of Adams and Webster. The essay on Macaulay appeared in the Massachusetts Quarterly Review, and by what oversight Miss Gobbe failed to include it in her edition, it is impossible now to say. Parker's only contribution to The Atlantic Monthly, in its first volume, was the essay on Henry Ward Beecher. It was 'his last work of this kind, and probably concluded his many contributions to magazine literature. It shows how highly he appreciated the great Brooklyn preacher. Excerpt from The Library School in the College Conrad Gesner, who kept Open house there for all learned men who came into his neighbourhood. Gesner was not only the best naturalist among the scholars of his day, but of all men of that century he was the pattern man of letters. He was faultless in private life, assiduous in study, diligent in maintaining correspondence and good-will with learned men in all countries, hospitable - though his means were small - to every scholar that came into Zurich. Prompt to serve all, he was an editor of other men's volumes, a writer of prefaces for friends, a suggestor to young writers of books on which they might engage themselves, and a great helper to them in the progress of their work. But still, while finding time for services to other men, he could produce as much out of his own study as though he had no part in the life beyond its walls. Excerpt from The Scholar in a Republic: Address at the Centennial Anniversary of the Phi Beta Kappa of Harvard College, June 30, 1881 No matter how much or how little truth there may be in the tradition: no matter what was the origin or what was the object of our society; if it had any special one, both are long since forgotten. We stand now simply a representative of free, brave, American scholarship. I emphasize American scholarship.
