Multiplying a dividend by a number has the same effect upon the quotient as dividing the divisor by that number. Also, to "bring down" a figure is equivalent to multiplying the remainder by 10 and adding that number, and to "cut off" a figure from the divisor is equivalent to subtracting that number and dividing by 10. Then, evidently one may "cut off" a figure from the divisor instead of "bringing down" one from the dividend, without having much effect upon the quotient. (What is the difference?)
