Excerpt from Simple History of English Literature: With Illustrative Extracts Young people can scarcely begin too early to learn the beauties of our English poets and prose writers - to enter the society so numerous and so gentle of kings and statesmen lingering patiently, not to grant audience but to gain it, in those plainly furnished and narrow ante-rooms, our bookcase shelves. If I have given any young folks a desire to wander further into the glorious world of which this book is but a glimpse, to use for themselves the golden key admitting to that world which all possess - the power to read - I shall be amply satis fied. If, in addition to helping my young friends, I may have met the want felt by many another teacher, as by myself, of an easy introduction to the study of English literature, the purpose of this little book will be accomplished. Excerpt from A Short History of England's Literature To select those few authors with due regard to what is good in itself and what is historically of value, to choose from the hundreds whose writings have made for literary excellence, is under no circumstances an easy task. It is especially difficult and especially delightful for one who can echo most honestly the words of the French critic, En littérature j'aime tout. Excerpt from History of English Literature In the following pages the author aims to furnish a concise and interesting text-book of the history and development of English literature from the earliest times to the present. Especial attention is paid to literary movements, to the essential qualities which differentiate one period from another, and to showing the animating spirit of each age. It is more important to understand the relation of the age of Pope to that of Wordsworth than to know these two writers merely as individuals. It is better for the student to catch the general drift of literary thought than to study a large number of comparatively unimportant authors and to ignore the law of the survival of the fittest. The majority of people never have time for the study of any but the masters. Such people need a guide to tell them what to select from each age, just as much as travelers in England require a guidebook to indicate the most interesting places. The writer has made no attempt to minimize the study of authors as individuals. One of the features of this work consists in devoting a special section to summing up the general characteristics of each of the greatest individual authors. The theory that it is wise to teach the general before the special is now happily going out of fashion. But the moment we know two authors we ought to begin to compare them, to note their likeness and their difference. Edmund Spenser's vast epic poem The Faerie Queene is the most challenging masterpiece in early modern literature and is praised as the work most representative of the Elizabethan age. In it he fused traditions of medieval romance and classical epic, his religious and political allegory creating a Protestant alternative to the Catholic romances rejected by humanists and Puritans. The poem was later made over as children's literature, retold in lavish volumes and schoolbooks and appreciated in pedagogical studies and literary histories. Distinguished writers for children simplified the stories and noted artists illustrated them. Children were less encouraged to consider the allegory than to be inspired to the moral virtues. This book studies The Faerie Queene's many adaptations for a young audience in order to provide a richer understanding of both the original and adapted texts.
