Excerpt from Tapestries: Their Origin, History, and Renaissance Among those to whom I am especially indebted for assistance in the preparation of this book are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and its President, Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan, whose gifts and loans have done so much to make the Museum the centre of tapestry interest on this side of the Atlantic. Mr. William Clifford of the Library of the Metropolitan Museum, who has assembled there the best collection of tapestry books in the United States, and whose advice and suggestions have been invaluable. The Hon. Robert McCormick, American Ambassador to France, and Mr. Spencer Eddy, Secretary of the American Legation at St. Petersburg, for introductions given me to the occasion of my visit to Europe in 1906. Mr. Jules Guiffrey, Administrator of the Gobelins. Many museums and individuals and dealers for photographs or permission to illustrate. Among the individuals: Mr. George Blumenthal, the Duke of Devonshire, Lord Anglesey, Lord Fortescue, Mrs. A. Von Zedlitz, Mr. Philip Hiss, Mrs. Oscar Berg, Miss Ada Thurston, Mrs. Nicholas Longworth. Excerpt from The Tapestry Book Tapestries are not to be bought lightly, as one buys a summer coat, to throw aside at the change of taste or circumstance. They demand more of the buyer than mere money; they demand that loving understanding and intimate appreciation that exists between human friends. A profound knowledge Of tapestries benefits in two ways, by giving the keenest pleasure, and by providing the col lector - or the purchaser of a single piece - with a self protection that is proof against fraud, unconscious or de liberate. Excerpt from A Short History of Tapestry The history of tapestry dates but from yesterday. Step by step archives have demonstrated the existence in France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Germany, England, Denmark, and Russia, of numerous workshops, established in even the most obscure localities; while the store-chambers of princes and the treasuries of churches have revealed a large and varied collection of hangings long hidden from view. Admirable lists of tapestries, and of tapestry-workers, moreover, have been drawn up, with all the detail and precision that can be desired. But the time has now come for completing these learned researches, of the utility of which no one is more sensible than the writer of this essay, by studies of a different kind. Critics, writers on art, amateurs and men of taste ask how tapestry was estimated by the community in the various stages of civilisation; what ideas it expressed, what changes it underwent, and how it affected artistic style. Excerpt from Tapestry The number of threads of the warp to be included in a shoot or a course depends upon the shades: m a plain horizontal part the shoots are made as long as possible, to accelerate the work, but it often happens that a shoot only takes in two or three threads of the warp. The outlines of the drawing to be repro duced, and the} greater or less extent of the half tints, indicate the length of the courses, as well as the number of them to be ranged one above the other. In order to avoid the appearance of mosaic, which would inevitably result from the simple juxtaposition of the colours, the workman passes from one colour to another by shades which partake of both, and which are graduated like hatching. The right treatment of these stipples forms one of the greatest difficulties of the work, and the practised eye of the workman can alone determine where to begin or finish a shade.
