Excerpt from An Introductory Study of Ethics The study of conduct which is here offered to students and teachers of philosophy was begun with the intention of furnishing simply a plain statement of the existing ethical' situation, by which I mean an analysis of the moral problem and a definition of the several types of ethical theory. But it was found impossible to make a plain state ment without adopting a point of view for the definition of the problem and the theories in question. And in the search for a satisfactory point of view I have been led to a more or less independent reconstruction of the situation as a whole. In a study like ethics, where nothing can be uttered which has not been in a measure foreshadowed, it is difficult to know how far one has succeeded in really contributing to the discussion; yet I hope that the following pages may be found not only useful to students beginning the study but of interest to those already familiar with its problems. Excerpt from Short Studies in Ethics I should be sorry if any one thought, from glancing at the topics I have treated, that I seemed content to put lessons in practical Morality in place of instruction in the Scriptures and definite religious teaching. Nothing can take the place of the Scriptures. But I feel convinced that these two aspects of Truth must go hand in hand. The young mind requires the truth to be presented to it from all sides, and nothing appeals to it so strongly as a modern example. My own idea as to the use of such a book as this is that it should supplement Bible instruction. The lessons are short enough to be taught in half an hour. If one topic is taken up each week, and thoroughly explained, and enlarged on by fresh examples from current life and history, the whole book can be easily mastered in the school year, and leave ample time for review and examination. If it should prove helpful to other teachers, my labour will be amply rewarded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Study of Ethical Principles My other obligations I have tried to acknowledge in the course of the book, but it is difficult to make such acknowledgments complete. I have to thank my former colleague, Professor Walter G. Everett, of Brown Uni versity, for many helpful suggestions made while the work was in manuscript, and my brother, Professor Andrew Seth, of the University of Edinburgh, for his aid and advice while the original edition was passing through the press. Excerpt from Self and Neighbour: An Ethical Study The work that follows is a study in ethical theory. Its first part is historical and critical its second portion is a short essay in the Reconstruction of ethical doctrine. A review of the chief classical theories of morals will reveal in them, we think, the presence of a common defect. They are defective, as we try to show, in that they regard virtue, like health, as something which refers essentially to the individual, and which can be privately attained they imply that a man may be good in himself and all alone. The Kantian, and indeed nearly all modern, theory, ' says a recent writer, rests on the assumption that the individual is an end in himself.' 1 Few, of course, would dispute the fact that the individual is an end in himself in the sense that he is a moral agent, and is subject only to the constraint of his own conscience. Moralists, however, have tradition ally regarded the individual as an end in himself in a sense which seems to us inadmissible. They have virtually conceived his life as isolated and detached, and have supposed that, like some Robinson Crusoe, he could be good all alone. Excerpt from A Manual of Ethics The most considerable alterations, however, occur in Book I. I have thought it desirable to add a good deal of new material on the development of the moral life and of the moral judgment. It may be held that these sub jests belong more properly to Sociology and Psychology than to Ethics in the stricter sense; but I have found that their absence is a more serious defect than their presence. I have also added, at the beginning of Book II., a short historical account of the leading points of view in ethical. Excerpt from A Historical Introduction to Ethics The criticism of moral systems constitutes a special section. In this way the repetition of objections which hold against a number of systems has been avoided. In the classroom, how ever, the author has departed from this plan. Students require and often request some kind of criticism before the lecturer passes from one system to another. The best plan in actual practice is to indicate the chief lines of criticism in concluding the analysis of an author, and toward the end of the course to summarize the various systems, giving a general and special criticism of the theories of morality. The collection of the points of criticism into one division, while having special advan tages in a printed work, need not interfere with the carrying out of the above method in practice, for it is a very easy matter to turn from one part of a book to another. In the choice of the types of ethical theory scarcely any two men would agree, and the author can scarcely hope to escape the accusation of most serious omissions. Some of these omissions will, however, be pardoned by one who bears in mind that the present work does not pretend to be a history of ethics, that the number of types must be relatively few, lest the student be lost in a maze of detail, and that the author can only hope to introduce the student to the field of ethical speculation. Excerpt from Moral Values a Study of the Principles of Conduct This volume, which is offered for the use of college and university classes, has grown out of the author's experience in trying to introduce students to the fundamental problems of ethics. It is hoped, however, that the book may make an appeal to a wider circle of readers - to men and women of various callings to whom neither convention nor authority seems to offer satisfactory answers to the insistent problems of the moral life. If such readers do not feel an interest in the more technical questions of philosophy, they are cer tainly concerned with those universal human problems that arise out of all genuine experience in the business of living. The titles and divisions of chapters will indicate the por tions of the work best suited to individual readers. The attention of the general reader may, however, be called to Chapter VII, the World of Values, to Chapter VIII, . In dividual and Social Values, and also to the discussions of Moral Law, Freedom, and Morality and Religion. Several sections of this last chapter are devoted to the problem of evil. Contemporary events have served to make this prob lem keenly felt in many quarters where its significance has, in the past, been slighted or ignored. The appearance of another book in the field of ethics may seem to demand justification by the presence of features that distinguish it from the many able works already extant. The most obvious characteristic of the present work is sug gested by its title. All the problems of morality are here treated as problems of value. The principle of value is car ried through from the first chapter to the last, Where it is applied to the questions of religion. All human activities, it is shown, are judged to be good or bad, better or worse. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Good Man and the Good: An Introduction to Ethics Many pages would be needed adequately to record my thanks to those who have helped me in my study of ethics. My acknowledgments must be limited to those who have aided directly in the preparation of the book: to my mother and my father, first of all; to my friends and colleagues, Professors Mary S. Case and Eleanor A. MCC. Gamble, expert critics, lavish of their time and their interest; and to one other - the brilliant, young sociologist, Carleton H. Parker, who throughout his life devoted his great gifts of eager scholarship, of keen judgment, and of human fellowship to all who turned to him, to his friends, his students, the industrial workers whom he understood, the state and country which he served. A golden morning's conversation with him 111 a California garden is held in my grateful memory by one of the chapters of this book.
