Excerpt from A Simplified Course of Study in Grammar What fundamentals, ' essential to the correction of lack of agreement between subject and predicate, must be studied.2 Clearly nothing more than a study of the number' forms of nouns and of verbs. The teaching of number forms of nouns is a simple thing, but with verbs our problem is more difficult. The old idea of conjugations required a tremendous expenditure of time and energy and did not accomplish the desired end. Conjugations should be simplified by teaching that a verb is singular when spelled in one way and plural when spelled in another. The elements of tense, or time, and person have absolutely nothing to do with the agreement in number between subject and predicate. Gender can well be eliminated, for few errors ever arise from that source. Who ever heard the expression John told her when the meaning is John told him; or Henry brought her book when the intent is Henry brought his own book? True, the possibility of error is present, and because of such possibility gender has been taught for centuries, but experience has shown that few errors of that nature arise. The continuance of teaching gender is merely another of the numerous fallacies handed down to us by our pedantic predecessors and continued by our no less pedantic colleagues. That is all. There is nothing left to do. The simplest words that the subject will bear have been used in the statements of facts and principles, the rule being to use, wherever possible, a common in preference to a technical word. English grammar is here taught distinctly and definitely as English, with no attempt to make it resemble the Latin, Greek, French, German, etc. The English has become a real and grand world-language, with a vast literature and a special genius of its own, and is not to be shaped to the model of any other. Throughout the work the con trolling idea has been, not that the grammar is to make the language, but that the language has made the gram mar. Fortunately, English can do what many other lan guages can not do, and in treating English grammar the English language is our sole concern. The illustrative selections, in the various Exercises, chosen both for simplicity and beauty, are all from the best literature, every quotation thus carrying authority. Each quotation is located, both by the name of the author and of his work, that the grammatical study may help also to lead the student out to a good range of reading. Many a sentence, if learned, will come back with more than the power of a rule, to settle some disputed point, for these extracts represent grammar in action in the hands of those who know how to use it. In fact, the success of the work depends largely upon their proper use. On account of their importance they are placed first, and not as in many books last, where they are seldom reached, and so altogether neglected. Their use is to keep the language forms of the grammar content so familiar that they become a matter of habit more than one of thought. To illustrate Modifies a noun has been so many times associated with adjectives, that as soon as the first is noted the other follows as a matter of Course. This familiarity leaves the mind free to think out some additional fact, as completes the predicate, and so draw the conclusion - attribute comple ment. Inasmuch as the answers to these questions form a summary of what has gone before, they can not be used with any success until after the children are perfectly familiar with the topic. In this case the repetition of the answer will be merely so many words without any meaning. If at any time the teacher finds that the child can not make the application of the answer he has given to the sentence, she should stop the questions and go back to the sentence work in that group. The devices for their use are many. The class may be arranged in two sides. For each side one is chosen as a tally-keeper. Questions are given turn about, a failure to answer correctly being recorded. The side having the fewest points against it, wins.
