Instead of dismissing the existence of collective nouns in English on syntactic grounds, the article proposes that collective nouns comprise a contextual or discourse category of nouns exhibiting duality of number. This duality stems from a choice, open to the writer or speaker, of using a collective noun as either a singular or plural noun--except for a few restrictions. The process of selecting one grammatical number rather than the other is more or less a semantic problem; however, since this choice manifests itself formally either within or across the boundaries of a main clause or sentence, it has syntactic or contextual (anaphoric) consequences and is therefore describable in grammatical terms. The three main types of collective nouns observed (i.e., particularizing, unique, and generic) are discussed individually. (Author).

Motivated by practical problems in engineering and physics, drawing on a wide range of applied mathematical disciplines, this book is the first to provide, within a unified framework, a self-contained comprehensive mathematical theory of duality for general non-convex, non-smooth systems, with emphasis on methods and applications in engineering mechanics. Topics covered include the classical (minimax) mono-duality of convex static equilibria, the beautiful bi-duality in dynamical systems, the interesting tri-duality in non-convex problems and the complicated multi-duality in general canonical systems. A potentially powerful sequential canonical dual transformation method for solving fully nonlinear problems is developed heuristically and illustrated by use of many interesting examples as well as extensive applications in a wide variety of nonlinear systems, including differential equations, variational problems and inequalities, constrained global optimization, multi-well phase transitions, non-smooth post-bifurcation, large deformation mechanics, structural limit analysis, differential geometry and non-convex dynamical systems. Thirty years after the publication of his classic work Dōgen Kigen—Mystical Realist, Hee-Jin Kim reframes and recasts his understanding of Dōgen's Zen methodology in this new book. Through meticulous textual analyses of and critical reflections on key passages primarily from Dōgen's Shōbōgenzō, Kim explicates hitherto underappreciated aspects of Dōgen's religion, such as the ambiguity of delusion and also of enlightenment, intricacies of negotiating the Way, the dynamic functions of emptiness, the realizational view of language, nonthinking as the essence of meditation, and a multifaceted conception of reason.
