This study examines the benefits of implementing the Defense Data Network at a military organization. The effects of computer-mediated communication, both intended and unintended, are examined. Sociotechnical design is discussed as one effective means to implement the DDN in order to maximize its benefits; this theory contends that the social as well as technical aspects of a system must be considered to generate improved performance. A technical analysis of applying this theory to DDN implementation is provided. A social analysis, the result of a questionnaire administered to three independent samples of DDN users, also is included. Conclusions and recommendations for the study are: Keywords: Sociotechnical, Computer communications, Training, Theses, Management engineering, Computer communications. (jes).

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

DoD networks support a large number of geographically dispersed data bases maintained under heterogeneous software environments. There is an urgent need to provide uniform and simple user access to these data bases, especially for Command and Control systems. This report studies the problems of implementing a network query language and the design of good user interfaces, especially for structurally complex data bases such as the Electronic Warfare Information System (EWIS). Software standards for future data base development are also discussed, especially the problem of adapting Ada to interface to existing data base systems. Further development of data base interfaces is required, and it is suggested that a test-bed be set up to support a selection of C3I data bases and to support this development. The geographic configurations and survivability requirements of DoD networks leads to overall configuration needs that are different from commercial networks. An analysis shows that distributed switches are preferable to a few large switches for a defense data network. Protocols and frontends are also discussed and a need for immediate action in these areas is established.

The increasing complexity of work systems and changes in the nature of workplace technology over the past century have resulted in an exponential shift in the nature of work activities, from physical labor to cognitive work. Modern work systems have many characteristics that make them cognitively complex: They can be highly interactive; comprised of multiple agents and artifacts; information may be limited and distributed across space and time; task goals are frequently ill-defined, conflicting, dynamic and emergent; planning may only be possible at general levels of abstraction or require adaptive solutions; some degree of proficiency or expertise is required; the stakes are often high; and uncertainty, time-constraints and stress are seldom absent. To complicate matters further, cognition in complex work settings is typically constrained by broader professional, organizational, and institutional practice and policy. These features of cognitive work present significant challenges to scientific methodology and theory, and subsequent design of reliable interventions. Historically, philosophers and scientists have attempted to understand the mental activities experienced during cognitive work at multiple levels of analysis using divergent methods. Some have examined cognition at an associative, contextual, functional or holistic level, relying on naturalistic methods to understand the higher mental processes as they work in harmony during goal-directed behavior. Others have embraced experimental methods and favored internal over external validity, often reducing cognition to a psychology of fundamental acts, such as short-term memory access with millisecond shifts in attention. More recently, Macrocognition has evolved as a complementary paradigm. Macrocognitive researchers have studied the cognitive functions and processes associated with skilled, adaptive, collaborative, and resilient cognitive work in the context of the aforementioned complexities of psychotechnical and sociotechnical work systems. Typically, this research has been carried out using cognitive task analytic techniques that draw on both naturalistic and (quasi-)experimental methods. The primary goals of research in Macrocognition are to better understand cognitive adaptations to complexity, to increase our theoretical understanding of the organism-environment relations by studying the mapping between cognitive work and real-world demands, and to promote use-inspired research capable of improving system performance.

Defense Data Network Ddn Performance Analysis Using Probability Modeling written by Donald P. Gaver and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with categories.

The Data Defense Network (DDN) is a large packet switching network that services elements of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). The emphasis of this report is to perform probabilistic analysis of certain features of the DDN system with a view of enhancing or 'optimizing' measures of service such as data base throughput and the waiting times experienced by data-base-transfer customers. The particular questions addressed, and the models constructed, are in response to tasking statements supplied by personnel from the Defense Communications Engineering Center, Reston, Virginia. In Section 2 models are presented to study the optimal length of a packet subject to transmission errors. When a data transfer is to occur the total collection of bits that comprise the data base is divided into packets, i.e., subcollections of contiguous bits from the data base plus a header carrying address information. In Section 3 models are introduced to study the effect on D's buffer of all sources retransmitting at a retransmission interval of length 8. We also model the behavior of one form of congestion control, exponential backoff, a procedure that increases successive time-out intervals possibly from 8 to 28, 28 to 48, etc. In summary, probabilistic models have been constructed to study the effect of packet size and message size on system throughput and response time of a data-transfer operation. The effect of packet retransmission on response times has also been evaluated. (KR).
