Como é a vida de solteira/o para mulheres e homens em Salvador? Qual o significado da solteirice nos dias atuais? Este livro tem como base o estudo de tese defendida pela autora no ano de 2012, que buscou compreender o fenômeno da solteirice na contemporaneidade, a partir de experiências e construções de sentidos atribuídos a essa condição para homens e mulheres adultas/os, de classe média, solteiras/os e que moram sozinhas/os em Salvador, Bahia. O estudo se fundamentou em uma epistemologia feminista, adotou métodos quanti e qualitativos para construir dados com o uso de grupos focais, questionário, entrevistas biográficas e diários de campo. Os principais resultados da investigação desvelam a solteirice a partir das suas dimensões "estado civil", "estilo de vida", "solidão" e "liberdade", e de um mapeamento das experiências do cotidiano de pessoas solteiras dentro e fora do lar, observando diferenças e proximidades de gênero na forma com que a solteirice é vivida.

O livro que temos em mãos traz à luz uma faceta pouco conhecida de Fayga Ostrower: a de designer de estampas. Vanessa Mendonça, pesquisadora sensível e pertinaz, segue o rastro de suas fontes com determinação e amor ao tema em doses equivalentes e, dessa forma, terminou por conquistar mais do que almejou. Foi esse o caso quando recebeu da viúva de Decio Vieira, Dulce Holzmeister, a coleção de estampas da Tecidos Modernos, empresa fundada por Decio e Fayga na década de 1950. Com esse gesto de confiança e generosidade, Dulce tanto contribuiu quanto reconheceu a relevância da pesquisa de Vanessa para a história da arte brasileira. A autora descortina uma parte da obra de Fayga que complementa seu perfil multifacetado: a artista, já consagrada no campo da gravura, estende-se para o design sem preconceitos ou purismos, pondo em prática a ideia de aproximação entre arte e vida, uma das influências da Bauhaus na arte moderna. Fayga Ostrower, que aderiu à abstração lírica e renunciou às obras de cunho social (lugar privilegiado da gravura naqueles anos de 1950) por rejeitar a estetização da pobreza, tem nos tecidos a efetivação do ideal de levar a arte para um público maior e diversificado. A gravura, que já tinha esse caráter de democratização da arte por meio dos múltiplos, tem na atuação de Fayga e Decio uma afirmação desse impulso de abertura. Os artistas conquistam um grande público colocando por terra a crença de que a arte moderna não atendia ao gosto popular. Dessa maneira, ampliaram o alcance da arte ao atingir pessoas não acostumadas ao circuito oficial de exposições, integrando de fato a arte e a vida, a beleza ao cotidiano e ao espaço vivencial. E, como se isso já não fosse um grande feito, ainda colocaram o Brasil em evidência no mercado internacional. Um belo exemplo de socialização da arte para além das utopias.
