In the appendix I have indicated after the name of each author the translation used. Here no name is given, the extracts were translated either by Mr. R. F. Scholz or by myself. In using the translations I have made a few slight changes in wording and punctuation. I have usually retained any important notes given in the translations. The illustrations are intended merely to suggest that pictures form a very important class of sources. In the appendix brief statements are given as to the provenance and description of these pictures. Most of our text-books are well illustrated, and their pictures should be utilized as far as possible for class room exercises. No fancy-pictures should be so used; only representations of actual remains, of statuary, or of Roman drawings. The students should describe what the picture represents and its historic importance. This purpose has determined not only the selec tion of the material, but also the method of presentation. Although the book contains some descriptions of institu tions, it is largely narrative and biographical; preference has been given to those passages which illustrate life and character, ori which help the reader to an appreciation of general literature. To make the subject-matter intelligible as well as attractive to young readers, the quotations have been so connected and interwoven as to form a continuous story, and the difficulties have been explained in notes and references. These features will doubtless commend the book to many who, having passed the age of the pupil, are still interested in the literature and the life of ancient Rome. As a basis for the text, English translations, so far as they are available, have been used with the consent of the publishers. These translations, however, have been freely altered, with a view chiefly to the simplification of the style; at the same time care has been taken to reproduce faithfully the meaning of the authors represented. The sections which deal with domestic events will probably be found to be more complete, and therefore more valuable, than those which deal with foreign issues. The sacrifice of the details of domestic policy to personal anecdote and military history is a characteristic of most of the authors on whom we have had to rely. In particular, the legislation of any portion of this period has usually to be pieced together from a number of scattered fragments. We have, therefore, tried to make the portion of our work which deals with internal history, as complete as possible, while we were unable to present the details of campaigns and battles without making the book exceed the limits which we thought necessary to its utility. D.; By the Library Method, for Schools and Colleges The accompanying work is the outcome of several years of experience and experiment in the teaching of History. The frequent complaint, I don't like History, led to discard ing the old method of assigning a uniform lesson from a single text-book, with its brief outline of important events. Mommsen's four-volume History of Rome, Philip Smith's three-volume History of the World, and two or three brief school text-books by different authors, were placed upon the teacher's desk. Several topics were written on the blackboard, and the class told to look them up in any of the aforesaid books. The inability of the young pupil to use a library became at once appar ent. He could not find his way among the multitude of minor details and side issues in the more elaborate works. Thus, learning to use books became a practical part of the advantage in this method. To avoid unnecessary discouragement attendant on this experience, the teacher added to the topics the volume, and later, the pages, on which the essentials of the subject were to be found. The topics are arranged, so far as possible, in a chronological order; but when unity of subject has occasionally demanded it, chronology has. Been sacrificed to logic.
