Excerpt from A Study in English Metrics It is hoped that the study here presented may prove of value not only to professional students of metrics but to all who are seriously interested in poetry. It forms only one part, in itself complete, of an investigation of certain problems in verse structure the full carrying out of which was prevented by Miss Crapsey's death in the autumn of 1914. An indication of what remained to do may be found in the note appended to the essay. The tables printed as Additional Analysis present a portion of the data which had been collected for a second part of the study. To any one who reads to the end, it must be evident, that Miss Crapsey regarded the use of exact measurement and analysis which probably is denoted as the application of phonetics to metrics? as essential to the finer and righter appreciation of poetry; that she considered a full awareness of technique the necessary equipment of one who would understand fully the subtle and delicate beauty of verse. Excerpt from The Metric Versus the English System of Weights and Measures: Research Report Number 42, October, 1921 The National Industrial Conference Board presents herewith a report on "The Metric versus the English System of Weights and Measures." The report deals with a question of vital and timely importance, not only to the industrialist but to every citizen of the United States. Specifically the question is: "Shall the Metric System Be Substituted by Compulsion for the English System in This Country?" Agitation toward this end has been carried on during many years, and bills for the compulsory adoption of the metric system have from time to time been introduced in Congress. Bills of that nature are now before the House and Senate. Because of the importance and far-reaching economic bearings of the subject, the Conference Board has prepared this report in order that American industry might be aided by a clear presentation of facts and arguments in determining what its attitude should be towards the proposed change in systems. The report is presented in three parts. The first deals with the history and present national status of the English, metric and other systems of weights and measures. The second analyzes the application of the English and metric systems to various specialized fields, such as science, engineering, manufacturing and trade. The third sets forth in a judicial spirit, without taking a position either one way or the other, the arguments advanced by advocates of the metric and the English systems respectively, for and against the compulsory adoption of the metric system by the United States. The Board was fortunate in being guided in its work by an able Advisory Committee composed of the following men of broad business experience and scientific attainment: E. M. Excerpt from A Metric America: A Decision Whose Time Has Come In 1821 Adams did give serious attention to the metric system as an alternative for adoption. Yet, although he believed it approached the ideal perfection of uniformity applied to weights and measures, he rejected it because he felt that the time was not right for it. Most of our trade was with inch-pound England, and the metric system was not even firmly established in France, let alone the rest of the world. Better to wait, he pointed out, until a uniform international measurement system could be worked out. Adams' conditions have now been met: the world has committed itself to the metric system, and even in the United States its use is increasing. For America, it is a decision whose time has come. Three years ago the Congress asked for a sweeping investigation of the metric question (see inside front cover), because it sensed that the world trend toward metric called for a new assessment.
