Over the last three decades scholars in sociolinguistics have shown considerable interest in address terms in various contexts, with sub-Saharan Africa not featured much in these sociolinguistic studies. This book, therefore, presents a comprehensive description of the relationship between address terms on one hand and socio-cultural context on the other hand, using an ethnographic research approach consisting of semi-structured interviews, observation, and field notes. Three speech communities (a public university and two less urban communities) in Cape Coast, a former capital and a tourist hub in Ghana, constituted the research site. The book, first, shows that nine categories of address terms constitute the lexicon interlocutors in the selected communities use in their interactive encounters. Second, the differences in the use of these address terms were dictated by such variables as gender, formality, and age. Given the wave of globalization sweeping across the world, this work should enhance intercultural communication. The work also has implications for the scholarship on onosmatics.

Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Communications - Miscellaneous, University of Mosul, language: English, abstract: The nature of this study is to investigate the socio-cultural rules that govern address usage in daily conversation in Mosuli Arabic within family members. A socio-pragmatic approach is adopted in this study and by using semi-structured interviews to collect data from 80 participants in English Department, College of Education for Humanities, University of Mosul. The selection of the participants is done through four variables namely: age, gender, educational status and marital status. In this study, two theoretical framework are selected as a model of analysis namely the communication accommodation theory and the power and solidarity theory of Brown and Gilman. The study finds that the age and family status are the most effective determiners of address choice in Mosul society. Language is the main way for exchanging information and knowledge. In addition, it shows individuals’ identities, cultures, relationships and preferences to become closer or distant from each other. The way people open and end conversation, and address one another in a given situation are significant in the study of communication. Address forms are not neutral in communication. They convey attitudes and feelings; the choice of these terms is based on the way interlocutors evaluate communication situation. The choice of address terms reveals the social relationship between the addresser and the addressee. Meanwhile, it represents the social characteristics of speaker. Every time one person speaks to another, there is created a host of options centering around whether and how persons will be addressed or named. By now, still there are many unanswered questions about address terms, since address terms are as complicated as the society itself. The main issues are how people address each other and how distinct forms like personal names, family names, pronouns, titles, nicknames are used to address.

Recent research has suggested that some conventionally masculine address terms are becoming more gender neutral in English speaking countries. This study examines the four most prominent gendered address forms in New Zealand English: mate, bro, man and guys in order to gain insight into the terms' social indexicalities, and track any shifts towards gender neutrality. The study takes a mixed-methods approach to analysing two distinct data sets: four corpora of spoken New Zealand English and a data set collected from a range of current media sources. Results from this study suggest that mate is in retreat in younger New Zealanders' speech, while bro may be increasing in usage as an unmarked form. Results also suggest that both man and guys have a largely gender free status and are being used frequently in New Zealand. These findings contribute to the growing interest sociolinguists are taking in informal address terms by providing an analysis of the interactional and social functions of address forms in New Zealand English.
