The working fluid for the pulse tube refrigerator is Helium, which is non-toxic to humans and harmless to the environment. The Pulse Tube Refrigeration unit offers a viable alternative to units that currently require CFC and HCFC working fluids. Pulse Tube Refrigerators can be operated over wide range of temperatures. These units can be used in numerous space and commercial applications, including food freezers freeze dryers. It can also be used to cool detectors and electronic devices. The design of Pulse Tube Refrigeration Unit was based on Orifice Pulse Tube Concept. First the gas is compressed in a compressor. Next it floes through the compressor after cooler, where heat is rejected to the water cooled loop. Then the gas enters the regenerator and cold end heat exchanger where heat is added to the gas from surroundings. The gas finally enters the Pulse Tube, orifice and reservoir. These three components produce the phase shift of mass flow and pressure, which is necessary for cooling. The gas shuttles forth between hot and cold ends. Heat is lifted against the temperature gradient and rejected at hot end heat exchanger, which is water cooled.

The absence of moving components at low temperature end gives the pulse tube refrigerator (PTR) a great leverage over other cryo-coolers like Stirling and GM refrigerators that are conventionally in use for several decades. PTR has greater reliability; no electric motors to cause electromagnetic interference, no sources of mechanical vibration in the cold head and no clearance seal between piston and cylinder. Moreover, it is a relatively low cost device with a simple yet compact design. The objectives of the present work are to 1) understand the basic phenomena responsible for the production of cold effect with the help of simple theoretical models based on ideal behavior of gases and to 2) test a single stage GM type pulse tube refrigerator present in the cryogenics lab of Mechanical Engineering Department of NIT Rourkela. Experimental studies consist of cooling behavior of the refrigeration system and suggesting modifications to improve the performance of the PTR.

Excerpt from Analytical Model for the Refrigeration Power of the Orifice Pulse Tube Refrigerator The general goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of the refrigeration mechanism and the capability of the ptr. More Specifically, this work is concerned with developing an analytical model for the refrigeration power generated in an orifice pulse tube refrigerator (cftr). With the aid of several simplifying assumptions, we derive equations which identify the important parameters in the system. Once the analytical expressions are devised, verification of the model is accomplished by comparing results to previous experimental studies as well as to experiments completed in this work. A simple, analytical model of the cooling power is useful for three reasons. First, such a model provides insight into the refrigeration mechanism. Often when a numerical model is used to rigorously describe a system, it is difficult to see the physics involved in the process. With an analytical expression, important parameters that affect performance are more easily recognized. Second, basic trends or dependencies of performance can be determined. Such dependencies will aid in optimization and indicate the range of parameters which should be studied in more detail either numerically or experimentally. Third, a simple analytical model will be useful for design. Although not as accurate as a numerical analysis, the model will be convenient for making approximate predictions of system size and refrigeration capacity of the ptr. This work is usefull for the the branch of physics and Engineering that involves the study of producing temperatures in the range from practically zero to, say, 125 K and of material behavior at these temperatures. A cryocooler is a refrigeration machine that reaches temperatures below, say, 125 K with a small refrigeration capacity. The objectives of the present work describe the analysis, design and an experimental working model of two stage pulse tube refrigerator. By using the Experiment set-up, cooling Behavior of the refrigeration system and refrigeration power has been investigated. Test a Two stage pulse tube refrigerator in the cryogenics lab of Mechanical Engineering Department of L.D.College of engineering, Ahmedabad. This book can use for initiation design and experiment with pulse tube refrigerator.

Excerpt from Measurements of the Efficiency and Refrigeration Power of Pulse-Tube Refrigerators The principle of operation, as given by Gifford and coworkers [1-5] and by Lechner and Ackermann is qualitatively simple. The basic pulse tube, shown in Figure 1, is closed at the top end, where a good heat - transfer surface must exist between the working gas (helium is best) and the surroundings, in order to dissipate heat. The bottom, Open, end also has a good heat transfer surface to absorb heat from its surroundings. The open end is connected to a pressure - wave generator (in our case a compressor) via a regenerator. During the compression part of the cycle any element of gas in the pulse tube moves toward the closed end and at the same time experiences a temperature rise due to adiabatic compression. At that time the pressure is at its highest value. During the maximum in the pressure wave the gas is cooled somewhat by heat transfer to the tube walls. In the expansion part of the cycle the same element of gas moves toward the open end of the pulse tube and experiences cooling due to adiabatic expansion. During the pressure minimum the gas is warmed by heat transfer from the tube walls. The net result of cycling the pressure in this manner is a shuttle heat transfer process in which each element of gas transfers heat toward the closed end of the pulse tube. The heat pumping mechanism described here requires that the thermal contact between the gas and tube be imperfect, so that the compression and expansion processes are somewhere between isothermal and adiabatic. The best intermediate heat transfer generally occurs when the product of pulse frequency and thermal relaxation time between the gas and the tube walls is approximately unity. The early work on this type of refrigerator was done using a valved compressor and a rotary valve to switch the pulse tube alternately between the high and low pressure sides of the compressor; the pressure wave was approximately a square wave. Such a technique lowers the overall efficiency since no work is recovered in the expansion process. However the actual refrigeration process is relatively efficient because of the short times for compression and expansion, and the long times for heat transfer at the pressure plateaus. The lowest temperature of 124 K was achieved in 1967 by Longsworth [a] with a pulse tube 19 mm in diameter by 318 mm long. The high and low pressures were mpa and mpa, respectively, for a pressure ratio of at a pulse frequency of Hz. At the low temperature limit of 124 K, a gross heat pumping rate of 5 w was obtained which was totally consumed by loss terms such as conduction and regenerator ineffectiveness.
