I thought at the time, after a cur sory consideration both of the internal and external evidence afforded by the length of the said article and the general physical features of South Africa, that the writer ought to have headed his screed The Expressionless Veldt. A thing about which a correspondent, busied with other matters, and feeling the effects of the heat, can dash of four columns between sunset and sunrise, is hardly to be termed inexpressible. And yet one could sympathise with that author there is a fine flavour of the oxymoron about his title which whets the literary appetite, as though a man should say This is not for mortals to express, and lo here are four columns.' Excerpt from Letters to His Wife MY first idea in printing my husband's letters was to have them, in a complete and more convenient form, for private circulation among those few intimate friends and relations to whom I had sent copies of each letter as it arrived. During the last few weeks, however, I have been asked by so many people to have his letters published, that I have at last decided to let them appear as they now do. But I do this very hesitatingly. To those who knew my husband, and who know his writings, no apology is needed. To others I feel I should like to give some explanation. The letters were written under very great difficulties. How great, I think, few people can realise without having known the man. He was French by descent, his branch of the Vernede family being Huguenots, who left southern France in 1685 at the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, and emigrated to Holland and then to England. Excerpt from A Subaltern in Serbia: And Some Letters From the Struma Valley In the minds of many, there will still linger threads of the story of how the Anglo-French attempted to go to the assistance of Serbia in the latter part of 1915, while the gallant little Serbian Army was offering so stubborn a resistance to the invading Austro-German-Bulgar Forces. The Allies landing at Salonika; the campaign among the snow-clad mountains of Serbia, attended by great hardships, and conducted under conditions before which the imagination pales; and the inevitable but none the less sensational collapse of the Expedition and the withdrawal into Greece of the small Allied Force, form but an insignificant chapter in the history of the War. To those who remain of the Tenth (Irish) Division, as it was then composed, it will, however, remain something more than a memory. The brief sketch which follows is necessarily incomplete, and lays no claim to be anything but a rough chronicling of the events which attended the Expedition so far as it concerned one of the Irish Battalions which took part in that short-lived campaign in Serbia.
