Excerpt from Song and Scenery: Or, a Summer Ramble in Scotland A wide and interesting topic lies in the relations of man to his material abode. This volume touches only one point of it, and that in the slightest and most inci dental way. The bonds of affection between us and external nature are of our own creating, are the tenderest and most con trolling over those in whom imagination has the greatest power; and yet are most practical for all; and, in their various degrees, represent the intellectual character Of nations. The love ofa people for the land of their birth and residence is the Spring of some of the noblest and purest features of human nature, and is strongest in the best. Excerpt from The Sportsman in Ireland, Vol. 2 of 2: With His Summer Route Through the Highlands of Scotland Owen stood behind, loaded with baskets, from some of which might be seen to peep certain corks, indicative of an attention to the possible privations of a sea-voyage. All was hilarity; the freshness of the morning air, the anticipation of success, amid scenes of novelty, and, above all, the merry companionship I had secured, conspired to make such Opening days little gems of remembrance. Excerpt from Rollo in Scotland N the course of his travels in Europe, Rollo went with his uncle George one summer to Spend a fortnight in Scotland. There are several ways of going into Scotland from England. One way is to take a steamer from Liverpool, and go up the Clyde to Glasgow. This was the route that Mr. George and Rollo took. On the way from Liverpool to Glasgow, Rollo became acquainted with a boy named Waldron Kennedy. Waldron was travelling with his father and mother and two sisters. His sisters were mild and gentle girls, and always kept near their mother; but Waldron seemed to be always getting into difficulty, or mischief. He was just about Rollo's age, but was a little taller. He was a very strong boy, and full of life and spirits. Excerpt from Summer at the Lake of Monteith These pages - containing some notes of a locality unsurpassed in placid loveliness, and surrounded by much of the sublime, but which has hitherto attracted little notice of the great travelling world - are now, for the first time, presented to the public in a collected form. When the idea first occurred to the Author, of bringing the "Lake of Monteith," and the old traditions that still linger around its shores, prominently before the public, he was actuated by the desire of lending his humble aid to raise in the estimation of those who, flying from the din and bustle of commerce, seek for health and pleasure amid the glories of Nature, a locality which, although seldom traversed by the tourists who flock from all quarters of the world to behold with their own eyes the land of "the mountain and the flood," is, in his estimation, unrivalled in its varied charms, and to which he feels proud to be united by the strong tie of nativity. In attempting this, however, he acknowledges his inability to do justice to a subject with which only the genius of a Scott or of a Bums could competently engage. Excerpt from The Sportsman in Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2: With His Summer Route Through the Highlands of Scotland The scheme of Cosmopolite's tour in Ireland was somewhat similar to that undertaken by Colonel Thornton in Scotland fifty years previously, but the scale of his preparations was very different from that of the opulent Yorkshireman. It will be seen, too, that whereas Colonel Thornton, when he left his own camp, did so to pay visits to the various county magnates living near his route, Cosmopolite, on the other hand, contented himself with such accommodation as he could find in humble inns and farmhouses, varied occasionally by hospitality freely offered by the poorer gentry and clergy of the west. From a modern point of view the use of the incomparable bait, described on p. 28, is exceedingly reprehensible; but at that time the use of salmon-roe had not been declared illegal, and it is curious that Cosmopolite claims to have been the first to make its dangerous attractions known to Irish anglers. Excerpt from Footsteps of Dr. Johnson (Scotland) The wild objects which he said he wished to see I have not neglected, but here I trust chiefly to Mr. Speed's art. The peculiar manners which interested him far more than natural objects have been my special study. Even before I took the present work in hand I had examined them somewhat closely; but last summer, on my return from Scotland, in a quiet recess of the Bodleian Library, I carried my inquiries a good deal farther. In covering so large an extent of ground and in such a mass of details it is idle to hope that no error has been made. I can honestly say that I have done my best to be accurate.
