When Index of Sciences Ltd asked me to write my professional biography, I first thought the idea was a little arrogant and exaggerated. Reflection on that made me realize that it did not need to be about me as much as about the fascinating life I had as a surgeon and the exhilaration of practicing with others with who I was privileged to be involved. I thought, 'Maybe I can shed some light on the standards of excellence involved in being a surgeon.' Currently, I am an Emeritus Professor in Gastrointestinal Surgery, and as an academic surgeon working at the VUmc in Amsterdam, I have been involved my whole working life doing three things: treating surgical patients, implementing treatments for digestive diseases in minimally invasive surgery, and looking for evidence that Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery is superior or at least not inferior to the conventional open approaches. Now, these tasks belong to the position of being a surgeon, so what could be relevant for others beyond just telling what simply being a surgeon is? So my first question was: 'What can I share with those people who are not involved in medicine or surgery so that they could consider my biography to be interesting and relevant? My first feeling about this was negative because writing implies being able to convey knowledge in a fine and instructive way. Luckily, the redaction assistant Mr. Art Culton explained to me that writing a surgeon's biography would be very interesting for many people, not only for other surgeons and I could be assured that I would be aided with the writing. That helped me to decide to do the biography and I became convinced that focussing on some challenging aspects of my professional life would sufficiently interest a broad public and add to the luster of the profession of the surgeon. So, I have tried to portray aspects of my professional life as a surgeon in 20 chapters; starting from the beginning of my career to after my retirement in 2014. I explain in a sequential way how the life of a surgeon developed in a specific direction to finalize, as in my case, as an academic surgeon.

A “lyrical, inspirational” story of doctors who changed the health care of an African nation (Tom Brokaw, author of The Greatest Generation) Dr. Dilan Ellegala arrives in Tanzania, shocked to find the entire country has just three brain surgeons for its population of forty-two million. Haydom Lutheran Hospital lacks even the most basic surgical tools, not even a saw to open a patient’s skull. Here, people with head injuries or brain tumors heal on their own or die. When confronted with a villager suffering from a severe head trauma, Dilan buys a tree saw from a farmer, sterilizes it, and then uses it to save the man’s life. Yet Dilan realizes that there are far too many neurosurgery patients for one person to save, and of course he will soon be leaving Tanzania. He needs to teach someone his skills. He identifies a potential student in Emmanuel Mayegga, a stubborn assistant medical officer who grew up in a mud hut. Though Mayegga has no medical degree, Dilan sees that Mayegga has the dexterity, intelligence, and determination to do brain surgery. Over six months, he teaches Mayegga how to remove tumors and treat hydrocephalus. And then, perhaps more important, Dilan teaches Mayegga how to pass on his newfound skills. Mayegga teaches a second Tanzanian, who teaches a third. It’s a case of teach-a-man-to-fish meets brain surgery. As he guides these Tanzanians to do things they never thought possible, Dilan challenges the Western medical establishment to do more than send vacationing doctors on short-term medical missions. He discovers solutions that could transform health care for two billion people across the world. A Surgeon in the Village is the incredible and riveting account of one man’s push to “train-forward”—to change our approach to aid and medical training before more lives are needlessly lost. His story is a testament to the transformational power of teaching and the ever-present potential for change. As many as seventeen million people die every year because of a shortage of surgeons, more than die from AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. Dilan Ellegala and other visionaries are boldly proposing ways of saving lives.

The revealing, compelling memoir of one of Australia's foremost cardiothoracic surgeons, Dr Nikki Stamp. Raw, honest and compelling, Scrubbed is Dr Nikki Stamp's account of her life as one of Australia's leading cardiothoracic surgeons. A life lived at the very edge of modern medicine, where heart surgeons walk the thinnest of lines between life and death, and yet where the greatest challenge can be the medical system itself. From childhood Nikki Stamp wanted to be a doctor. It was a calling, not a career. Her love for her vocation only grew as a medical student, and as a young registrar going through training rotations she fell, totally and utterly, for the hugely demanding specialty of cardiothoracic surgery. But alongside the excitement and enormous challenges of trying to make it in one of the toughest and most competitive fields of surgery came warning signs. Even in the operating theatre, where she felt most alive, she battled with sexism, enormous egos and at times outright bullying. And within the hospital system she lived with inhuman hours, chronic sleep deprivation and bureaucratic mismanagement that had a profoundly damaging effect on her life outside of work. From the drama of the operating theatre, filled with both triumph and tragedy, to the brutal realities of surgical training and the sacrifices needed to make it to the top, to entrenched misogyny and the grinding nature of hospital politics, Scrubbed is one of the most revealing books yet written about the real life and experiences of a surgeon.

A Surgeon S Century written by Richard Samuel Jessop Clarke and has been published by Ulster Historical Foundation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Ulster has produced an impressive number of surgeons who have gained world-wide renown. None has been more celebrated, or more deserving of a biography than Sir Ian Fraser whose life spanned almost the whole of the 20th century. Following a brillant university career, Fraser's training occupied most of the inter-war years. As with most innovatory surgeons, his career really flourished in war-time conditions. During the Second World War, he was at the forefront of the early field trials of a drug that would benefit the whole of mankind - penecillin - first, in the crucial allied victory in North Africa and then in Italy. For the courage and skill he consistently showed during during these campaigns, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1945 came his timely appointment to the surgical staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast, in which he was to serve with equal distinction until his retirement in 1966. Richard Clarke's sympathetic, insightful and not uncritical biography could only have been written by someone who was taught by Fraser and who then worked alongside him. The outcome is a fascinating, and informed overall view of Sir Ian Fraser, the surgeon, the teacher, the writer and, above all, the man.
