Benet Laboratories has the responsibility for safe fatigue life (durability) testing of cannon system components. This safe fatigue or service life evaluation is accomplished by conducting constant amplitude fatigue testing in a laboratory setting. One such cannon component that requires testing is the gun tube. After each tube has received the required number of live fire rounds necessary to generate initial cracking at the bore surface (also known as heat-check cracking), it is brought to the laboratory for final hydraulic fatigue testing. A sample size of two 155-mm M776 gun tubes was hydraulically fatigue tested to failure at Benet Laboratories to assist in determining the safe fatigue life for the weapon. This report contains the results of the fatigue tests conducted on the subject tubes, including material inspections, failure lives, and the resulting value for safe fatigue life of the XM776 gun tube.

The Defense Metals Information Center conducted a brief survey of the present state of knowledge about fatigue with wide coverage to applications and with particular emphasis on means of early detection of fatigue damage. The survey has excluded consideration of reports of proprietary interest and of reports with security classification. However, it has included information from various branches of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The results of such considerations as have been possible are described in the following pages with the objectives of: (1) Delineating the current state of knowledge; (2) Indicating some of the current research toward increasing this knowledge; and (3) Pointing out areas where further work seems desirable. Fatigue And Hydrogen Cracking In Cannons With Mechanical And Thermal Residual Stresses written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with categories.

Bauschinger-modified autofrettage residual stresses are used to improve the fatigue intensity factor model for fatigue life of cannon pressure vessels. Effects of yield strength and initial crack size are included with applied and residual stress. In an S-N description of cannon tube life that matches full-scale cannon fatigue test results with an R2 correlation of O.92. Thermally induced residual stress near the bore of a fired cannon is modeled by finite-difference calculations of temperature and mechanics calculations of transient thermal stress and resulting residual stress. Temperature-dependent thermal and physical properties are used, and the temperature distributions are validated by direct comparison with the known temperatures and the observed depths of microstructural damage and transformation in fired cannons. Calculations of fatigue life and yield pressure for a range of applied pressure, diameter ratio, yield strength, and percent autofrettage agree well with measurements frem full-scale cannons. Increased life is predicted for increases in yield strength and percent autofrettage, although the Bauschinger effect signiflcantiy reduces the amount of life Increase for autofrettage above 50%. The combined effects of mechanically Induced residual stress and thermally induced residual stress on cannon fatigue life are calculated, using an Increased initial crack size to account for thermal residual stress. Calculations of fatigue life are presented for a range of applied pressure and for selected gas temperatures.

Stress And Fatigue Life Modeling Of Cannon Breech Closures Including Effects Of Material Strength And Residual Stress written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with categories.

Laboratory fatigue life results are summarized from several test series of high-strength steel cannon breech closure assemblies pressurized by rapid application of hydraulic oil. The tests were performed to determine safe fatigue lives of high-pressure components at the breech end of the cannon and breech assembly. Careful reanalysis of the fatigue life tests provides data for stress and fatigue life models of breech components, over the following ranges of key parameters: 380 to 745 MPa cyclic internal pressure; 100 to 160-mm bore diameter cannon pressure vessels; 1040 to 1170 MPa yield strength A723 steel; no residual stress; shot-peen residual stress; overload residual stress. Modeling of applied and residual stresses at the location of the fatigue failure site is performed by elastic-plastic finite element analysis using ABAQUS and by solid mechanics analysis. Shot-peen and overload residual stresses are modeled by superposing typical or calculated residual stress distributions on the applied stresses. Overload residual stresses are obtained directly from the finite element model of the breech, with the breech overload applied to the model in the same way as with actual components. Modeling of the fatigue life of the components is based on the fatigue intensity factor concept of Underwood and Parker, a fracture mechanics description of life that accounts for residual stresses, material yield strength, and initial defect size. The fatigue life model includes six test conditions in a stress versus life plot with an correlation of 0.94. The model shows significantly lower correlation when known variations in yield strength, stress concentration factor, or residual stress are not included in the model input, thus demonstrating the model sensitivity to these variables.

Advances In Fracture Research written by B.L. Karihaloo and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-02 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Fracture is a major cause of failure in metallic and non-metallic materials and structures. An understanding of the micro- and macro- mechanisms of fracture enables materials scientists to develop materials with high fracture resistance, which in turn helps engineers and designers to ensure the soundness and integrity of structures made from these materials. The International Congress on Fracture is held every four years and is an occasion to take stock of the major achievements in the broad field of fracture, to honour those who have made lasting contributions to this field, and to reflect on the future directions. ICF9 is published in six volumes covering the areas of:-- Failure Analysis, Remaining Life Assessment, Life Extension and Repair- Failure of Multiphase and Non-Metallic Materials- Fatigue of Metallic and Non-Metallic Materials and Structures- Theoretical and Computational Fracture Mechanics and New Directions- Testing and Characterization Methods, and Interfacial Fracture Mechanics- High Strain Rate Fracture and Impact Mechanics.
