Uma história a retratar nossos indígenas em seu universo não invadido, não devastado pelo elemento de fora, buscando observar a realidade, em detalhes, de como de fato viviam as populações nativas do Brasil então. Contando assim o cotidiano de uma tribo indígena tupinambá antes da vinda dos europeus para cá, marcada por sua rica cultura (que foi pesquisada em vários relatos históricos desde o século XVI até a atualidade) e os ferozes embates desta para com as populações vizinhas. Tão terríveis que lentamente a levam a querer buscar desesperadamente uma saída para esta situação atual que os aflige. Surgindo a resposta que tanto buscam com a retomada na crença de um paraíso terrestre que os povos indígenas tupis em sua maioria nutriam, o chamando de a Terra onde não se morria. Que como seu nome diz se referia a uma terra perfeita, sem doenças, fome, envelhecimento ou outros sofrimentos. Um crer que fez com que ao longo de séculos incontáveis populações tupis de existência real a buscassem quando em momentos de grande tensão, antes e depois da vinda do colonizador. Em alguns casos terminando tais buscas de modo trágico (aniquiladas pela fome ou outras populações), enquanto em outros foram lentamente fazendo com que os tupis se disseminassem pela maior parte da América do Sul (desde trechos da Cordilheira dos Andes - no Peru e Bolívia; até a maior parte do litoral Brasileiro).Contudo, sendo o conflito existencial que o líder deste povo, Apoçub, vive assim o aspecto mais forte desta história, uma vez vivendo este herói o dilema de como criar uma nova ordem numa sociedade em que a maior parte do povo espera meramente vir a ser conduzida, os atuais donos do poder temem a mudança e os valores morais de sua gente são contrários a tudo que discorde de seus dogmas já consolidados. Uma sociedade que apesar de primitiva, assim se percebe ter vícios semelhantes aos dos ditos civilizados, como o preconceito em relação aos que são diferentes, belicosidade, competição, intrigas, ciúmes, etc. e que este Apoçub após uma experiência fantástica, incerto se ainda vivo ou morto, após um ferimento de guerra mortal, começa a refletir. Assim vendo a fragilidade dos dogmas criados por homens que assim precisam ignorar que os criaram, para tanto punindo, mesmo matando aos que possam ameaçar esta fragilidade. Tal qual vendo como os preconceitos cegam aos próprios erros e aos méritos dos outros.Deste modo retratando uma sociedade indígena que em seus dilemas mais humanos, em nada difere de nós e que por isso podemos nos identificar e mesmo por meio de sua leitura, refletirmos nossa própria condição em que somos principalmente o que nos ensinam a ser, somente podendo fugir a este condicionamento quando tomamos consciência desta condição.

Christianity and politics cannot and should not be divided. But in times of deep social division, how do Christians make political choices that aim to build a society of justice and peace, where wholeness and unity reign? With special reference to two apparently very different contexts, Brazil and the Czech Republic, this book delves into this question, suggesting that behind a clash of political populisms, there is a deeper theological conflict. Grace, the action of God in the world, is understood by some as material reward for their giving, and thus as an entitlement to goods, financial rewards, or narrow national interests. For others, grace is a gift of God that always goes beyond any attempt to possess it and enables attention to the other, especially the other who is poor, excluded, and oppressed. What this means concretely is discussed through a close reading of Pope Francis's Fratelli Tutti. Another world is possible, and this book sets out a vision of what it will look like.

Japanese Brazilian Saudades explores the self-definition of Nikkei discourse in Portuguese-language cultural production by Brazilian authors of Japanese ancestry. Ignacio López-Calvo uses books and films by twentieth-century Nikkei authors as case studies to redefine the ideas of Brazilianness and Japaneseness from both a national and a transnational perspective. The result suggests an alternative model of postcoloniality, particularly as it pertains to the post–World War II experience of Nikkei people in Brazil. López-Calvo addresses the complex creation of Japanese Brazilian identities and the history of immigration, showing how the community has used writing as a form of reconciliation and affirmation of their competing identities as Japanese, Brazilian, and Japanese Brazilian. Japanese in Brazil have employed a twofold strategic, rhetorical engineering: the affirmation of ethno-cultural difference on the one hand, and the collective assertion of citizenship and belonging to the Brazilian nation on the other. López-Calvo also grapples with the community’s inclusion and exclusion in Brazilian history and literature, using the concept of “epistemicide” to refer to the government’s attempt to impose a Western value system, Brazilian culture, and Portuguese language on the Nikkeijin, while at the same time trying to destroy Japanese language and culture in Brazil by prohibiting Japanese language instruction in schools, Japanese-language publications, and even speaking Japanese in public. Japanese Brazilian Saudades contributes to the literature criticizing the “cognitive injustice” that fails to acknowledge the value of the global South and non-Western ways of knowing and being in the world. With important implications for both Latin American studies and Nikkei studies, it expands discourses of race, ethnicity, nationality, and communal belonging through art and narrative.

In 1496-7, King Manuel I of Portugal forced the Jews of his kingdom to convert to Christianity and expelled all his Muslim subjects. Drawing upon narrative and documentary sources in Portuguese, Spanish and Hebrew, this book pieces together the developments that led to the events of 1496-7 and presents a detailed reconstruction of the persecution.
