' These] vignettes of Brownsville people, part real and part fiction, capture the character of our border community. The reader becomes involved with the characters and the stories. It's as though the essence of our society and culture had been opened to view through a historical prism. And the stories are just plain pleasurable to read.' -Dr. Anthony Knopp, Ph.D, Professor of History at the University of Texas at Brownsville, Texas

A Texas Tale Of The Depression written by Wanda Harris Arnold and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-06 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This story covers the time tunnel of the Great Depression in an area of Texas that had not changed for several decades and would continue to progress only slowly until the 1960sthe Panhandle. It is a child's view of the brutal realism of the time, the smells, the blood, the cold, the lack of sanitation, and the rigidity of the adults surrounding her. It is the story of the author's first year in a school where parents are entertained with a prejudicial skit about African Americans, where a teacher whips a boy with a razor strap until he bleeds, where the girls pick dandruff from the head of the teacher while she is instructing, and where the violent weather plays a role as both protagonist and antagonist. Seven-year-old Wanda Gene observes her environment, which is oftentimes unthinkable and repugnant to a modern reader, with clarity, humor, and the mature wisdom of a child who finds joy in petting the baby lambs on her farm and reviving rain-drenched chicks in the stove. With a child's innocence and naivet, she looks candidly at the customs of the era and questions their purpose, capturing as she does so the social milieu that was 1939.

Texas Tales written by Myra Hargrave McIlvain and has been published by Sunstone Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-15 with History categories.

These tales trace the Texas story, from Cabeza de Vaca who trekked barefoot across the country recording the first accounts of Indian life, to impresarios like Stephen F. Austin and Don Martín DeLeón who brought settlers into Mexican Texas. There are visionaries like Padre José Nicolás Ballí, the Singer family, and Sam Robertson, who tried and failed to develop Padre Island into the wonderland that it is today. There are legendary characters like Sally Skull who had five husbands and may have killed some of them, and Josiah Wilbarger who was scalped and lived another ten years to tell about it. Also included are the stories of Shanghai Pierce, cattleman extraordinaire, who had no qualms about rounding up other folks’ calves, and Tol Barret who drilled Texas’ first oil well over thirty years before Spindletop changed the world. The Sanctified Sisters got rich running a commune for women, and millionaire oilman Edgar B. Davis gave away his money as fast as he made it. Sam Houston, Jean Lafitte, Antonio López de Santa Anna, Lucy Kidd-Key, Minnie Fisher Cunningham, all these characters and many more—early-day adventurers, Civil War heroes, and latter-day artists and musicians—created the patchwork called Texas.

It is for good reason that J. Frank Dobie is known as the Southwest's master storyteller. With his eye for color and detail, his ear for the rhythm of language and song, and his heart open to the simple truth of folk wisdom and ways, he movingly and unpretentiously spins the tales of our collective heritages. This he does in Tales of Old-Time Texas, a heartwarming array of twenty-eight stories filled with vivid characters, exciting historical episodes, and traditional themes. As Dobie himself says: "Any tale belongs to whoever can best tell it." Here, then, is a collection of the best Texas tales—by the Texan who can best tell them. Dobie's recollections include such classics in Lone Star State lore as the tale of Jim Bowie's knife, the legend of the Texas bluebonnet, the story of the Wild Woman of the Navidad, and the account of the headless horseman of the mustangs. Other stories in this outstanding collection regale us with odd and interesting characters and events: the stranger of Sabine Pass, the Apache secret of the Guadalupes, the planter who gambled away his bride, and the Robinhooding of Sam Bass. These stories, and many more, make Tales of Old-Time Texas a beloved classic certain to endure for generations.

But when life comes at him head on he is forced to make some decisions that most teenagers never have to think about. Without any adult guidance in DW's life, he makes a decision to start selling drugs to help his best friend who has become addicted to crack. The money comes quickly and more easily than working on the farm. As soon as he pays back the money for his friend he continues to make some money for himself. Quickly DW's luck runs out and instead of getting busted, a corrupt local cop who works with a local drug dealer starts to demand money. DW wants to quit selling drugs but the cop continues to demand payments. Eventually DW makes the right decision and goes straight to get his life back in order. One night after going to the movies with his girlfriend, DW and her get into a fight. She leaves his house, and is found the next morning on the side of the road dead with drugs. The whole town blames DW for her death, but he is the only one who knows who actually did it. After getting kicked out of school, DW goes out and proves to everyone that he is not the person they are making him out to be. He fixes his life and signs up for the Army but before he leaves he has one thing left he needs to do. Drugs, murder, guns, money, family, friends, school, cops, and a girl all play a part into Cortez and DW's life.
