Excerpt from A Text-Book on Diseases of the Eye The writer has quoted his own cases and experiences, and stated his own Opinions; he has familiarized himself with the work of others, not only in their writings, but pretty largely by personal acquaintance, and drawn freely upon their labors, as may be seen by the references in the text, and by the bibliography. Of the illustrations many are familiar, while not a few have either not hitherto appeared in ophthalmic text-books, or are orig inal. In depicting diseases of the fundus oculi, black and white have been used for many of the ordinary lesions, while colored plates have been reserved for special conditions, some of which are familiar and others unusual. Excerpt from Hand-Book of Diseases of the Eye: A d104-Book for Students and Practitioners The object in presenting this small volume on the eye is to place before the student and the busy practitioner in a concise manner the results of recent investigations and their practical application. All unnecessary details have been omitted, and yet the common eye diseases and their treatment have been sufficiently elaborated. The special chapter on bacteriology has been incorporated because of the great aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment we obtain from the bacteriological examination of the acute inflammatory diseases of the eye. The chapter on refraction gives the details of modern methods necessary for preliminary work in this subject, and will serve as a groundwork for the finer tests which only experience can bring. The chapter on the sclera gives the latest investigations on the tuberculous origin of most forms of inflammation which attack this structure, also some points on tuberculin therapy. As an appendix to this chapter the Calmette ophthalmo-tuberculin reaction and the von Pirquet cutaneous test are considered as methods of diagnosing tubercular diseases of the eye. The chapter on the relation of the eye and the nose is a new departure in a purely ophthalmic text-book. It has become necessary because of the numerous eye affections now known to be dependent upon pathological conditions in the nose. A formulary has been appended which contains forty-one practical prescriptions, which will be of value to the practitioner. Excerpt from Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis, and Treatment of Diseases of the Eye MY experience with diseases of the eye, while in general practice, and the tedious task of sifting out of the larger text-books the diagnostic symptoms of the different eye diseases, have contributed or led to the compiling of these tables. They are designed more especially for the active practitioner, who does not claim to be an ophthalmologist, or even well posted on diseases of the eye. Excerpt from Relations of Diseases of the Eye to General Diseases: Forming a Supplementary Volume to Every Manual and Text-Book of Practical Medicine and Ophthalmology The point of view is from the side of the general practitioner, who having in hand a particular case, say for example of tabes' dor salis, is put into possession of the various eye_ lesions liable to occur; Whether these be present or absent he is prepared to understand the ocular phenomena. In fact, the book serves the valuable purpose of a cross index between the general field of medicine and an impor tant specialty. On the other hand, the oculist finds his range of view enlarged and is made to realize in a more adequate degree, that local disease may depend upon and be the signal of a lesion of some re mote organ or of a constitutional affection. He is made to appreciate the need of wide observation of symptoms, and-is kept in touch with the pathology and therapeutics of medicine at large. The editor has added little to the author's pages and has not taken upon himself the work of translation. Many of the illustrations are original with us, while a number are borrowed from well known text-books and treatises, to the publishers of which we are greatly indebted for their use. The chapters on the relations of ophthalmology to general medicine will be found to resemble in treatment the section devoted to that subject in the text - book on Diseases of the Eye edited by Drs. Hansell and Sweet, because they were both written by the same hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Diseases of the Eye: A Practical Handbook for the Use of General Practitioners and Students The aim of this little book is to give to the general practitioner and student a brief account of the principal affections of the eye and their treatment in as concise and practical a manner as possible. To this end accounts of the anatomy and physiology of the eye and of its physical optics have been omitted, as these subjects are best studied in the text books on Anatomy, Physiology, and Physics. Full directions for the various Operations on the eye have also been omitted, for only a very small proportion of medical men undertake these, and for such there is an ample choice of large text books on Ophthalmology. Lastly, directions for the use of the ophthalmoscope have been omitted, as after several years' experience with students I am most strongly of opinion that its use can only be learnt from clinical teaching, and that all printed instructions are little better than wasted labour.
