His life hasn't been a fairy tale... but after getting chased through the woods of Beacon Island by his new classmates, Eddie discovers a mysterious pen pal at the bottom of a well. Her note says her name is Ember and needs his help. Despite fearing that it all could be an elaborate prank, Eddie takes a chance and believes her. But Ember does not live at the bottom of a well. Far away, in a world of darkness, Ember is trapped in a tower. She is a Fen ? a luminous being whose skin glows and whose breath brings objects to life. However, few Fen are left. Most of them were murdered or enslaved by their greatest creations, the Perfect ? living statues that shape reality as they dance. Eddie will have to unravel the mysteries of Beacon Island if he has any hope of helping his new friend. Meanwhile, Ember's life balances on the edge of a Perfect's unstable temper. One misstep, one wrong word and she will suffer worse than death. Two worlds, kept divided for thousands of years, are about to intertwine.

'The Well of Saint Clare' is a dramatic novel by the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Anatole France. Written in first-person, the story is set in a Siena church, where the narrator encountered Reverend Father Adone Doni, who at the time was, like the narrator, working in the old Academy degli Intronati. The narrator had taken an instant liking for the Cordelier in question, a man who, grown grey in study, still preserved the cheerful, facile humour of a simple, unlettered countryman. Assiduous at the library, he was also a frequent visitor to the marketplace, halting for choice in front of the peasant girls who sell oranges, and listening to their unconventional remarks. He was learning, he would say, from their lips the true Lingua Toscana.

Within a relatively brief period of time (1690-1705), Madame D'Aulnoy created a rich and diviersified collection of fairy tales which rank second in importance only to those of Charles Perrault. Through close readings of the various tales, Professor DeGraff demonstrates how the interplay of structural forms and themes can best be understood within the framework of psychological intepretation. This study is above all a sensitive and innovative approach to an author whose writings have not yet received the critical acclaim they so justly deserve. This work is accessible to specialists and non-specialists alike and will appeal to proponents of women's studies. -- Amazon.com.
