‘A “Treatise on Abundance” (1638) and Early Modern Views of Poverty and Famine’ is an edited English translation of Carlo Tapia’s ‘Trattato dell’abondanza’. First published in Naples in 1638, the treatise offered the earliest systematic attempt to develop and publicize the most effective tools available to governments to fight famine and poverty. In particular, Tapia moved the discussion of these issues away from traditional religious approaches and aimed instead to offer a theoretical understanding of the issues—based in part on his study of both classical sources and contemporary legal theories—and practical advice that could help administrators in the provinces and in the capital.

[Italiano]: Prendendo come fonte di partenza la cronaca inedita di Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) e le numerose descrizioni di cerimonie e apparati decorativi in essa contenute, il volume affronta il problema del controllo dello spazio della città di Napoli negli anni successivi alla rivolta di Masaniello. Il testo analizza la “politica cerimoniale” di cinque viceré - dal conte di Oñate a Pedro Antonio de Aragón - affiancata da quella del governo municipale e del capitolo della cattedrale, e sottolinea i momenti di attrito tra i diversi cerimoniali e la realizzazione polifonica dei principali eventi festivi. Lo studio integra l’analisi di diverse fonti: le cronache, gli avvisi (in particolare quelli conservati a Roma e Modena), le polizze di pagamento degli antichi banchi napoletani, i protocolli notarili, le consulte del Consejo de Italia, i viglietti dei viceré, quadri e incisioni dell’epoca e, ovviamente, le relazioni - manoscritte e a stampa - destinate a trasmettere il discorso della festa. Queste ultime, generalmente considerate come fonte di partenza per lo studio di ogni cerimonia, risultano fortemente ridimensionate dal confronto con una documentazione di carattere meno intenzionale. Il “tributo ossequioso” delle feste diventa dunque parte integrante di una contrattatazione dell’esercizio del potere che acquista la sua visibilità all’interno dello spazio urbano, in cui non solo le grandi cerimonie scenografiche ma anche le semplici feste per le inaugurazioni delle opere pubbliche sono indicate come un’importante occasione per la rappresentazione del consenso. ./[English]: Starting from the unpublished chronicle of Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) and the numerous descriptions of ceremonies and festivals’ decorations that it describes, the present work deals with the issue of controlling Naples’ urban space in the years following the revolt of Masaniello (1647-1648). The book analyzes the "ceremonial policy" of five viceroys - from the Count of Oñate to Pedro Antonio de Aragón - flanked by that of the municipal government and the cathedral chapter, and highlights some instances of friction between the different ceremonials to show the polyphonic source of the main festive events. The study integrates the analysis of different sources: the chronicles, the gazettes (in particular those preserved in Rome and Modena), the payments of Neapolitan public banks, the notary protocols, the consultations of the Consejo de Italia, the viceroys' viglietti, paintings and engravings and, of course, the festival books - handwritten and printed - intended to convey the discourse of festival. The latter, generally considered as main sources for the study of each ceremony, are properly contextualized by comparing and contrasting them with “less biased” forms of documentation. The "obsequious tribute" offered through the festivals becomes a way for negotiating the exercise of power that acquires its visibility within the urban space, in which not only the great scenic festivals but also the simple ceremonies for the inauguration of public works were an important opportunity for representing consensus

This “carefully argued and well-written study” examines French royal statecraft in the globalizing economy of the early modern Mediterranean (Choice). This is the story of how the French Crown and local institutions accommodated one another as they sought to forge acceptable political and commercial relationships. Junko Thérèse Takeda tells this tale through the particular experience of Marseille, a port the monarchy saw as key to commercial expansion in the Mediterranean. At first, Marseille’s commercial and political elites were strongly opposed to the Crown’s encroaching influence. Rather than dismiss their concerns, the monarchy cleverly co-opted their civic traditions, practices, and institutions to convince the city’s elite of their important role in Levantine commerce. Chief among such traditions were local ideas of citizenship and civic virtue. As the city’s stature throughout the Mediterranean grew, however, so too did the dangers of commercial expansion as exemplified by the arrival of the bubonic plague. During the crisis, Marseille’s citizens reevaluated merchant virtue, while the French monarchy found opportunities to extend its power. Between Crown and Commerce deftly combines a political and intellectual history of state-building, mercantilism, and republicanism with a cultural history of medical crisis. In doing so, the book highlights the conjoined history of broad transnational processes and local political change.

"Early Economic Thought in Spain was published in 1978, and in her Foreword the author mentions that the discussion of long-term inflation in Spain from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries ought to be of interest since "we live in a time of inflation." The book can also be read as a history of Spanish responses to the decline of empire. At a number of points the author indicates that her study can be understood as a supplement to Joseph Schumpeter's History of Economic Analysis (1954). The chief contribution of this book is a review and summary of the development of economic thinking from the earliest days until about 1740 in one of the most important countries of Europe. Despite, or maybe because, Spain was in decline much of the last two centuries of this period, we are provided, as it were, with a ring-side seat for watching intellectuals come to terms with the forces behind such decline. Some of it, such as inflation, debt-financing, military over-extension, mercantilist protectionism, the preference of elites for their own economic benefit at the expense of the state, and more, will be familiar to readers who are familiar with the economic history of the last hundred years. Why are some parts of the world so rich and others so poor? Why did the Industrial Revolution--and the unprecedented economic growth that came with it--occur in eighteenth-century England, and not at some other time, or in some other place? Why didn't industrialization make the whole world rich--and why did it make large parts of the world even poorer? In A Farewell to Alms, Gregory Clark tackles these profound questions and suggests a new and provocative way in which culture--not exploitation, geography, or resources--explains the wealth, and the poverty, of nations. Countering the prevailing theory that the Industrial Revolution was sparked by the sudden development of stable political, legal, and economic institutions in seventeenth-century Europe, Clark shows that such institutions existed long before industrialization. He argues instead that these institutions gradually led to deep cultural changes by encouraging people to abandon hunter-gatherer instincts-violence, impatience, and economy of effort-and adopt economic habits-hard work, rationality, and education. The problem, Clark says, is that only societies that have long histories of settlement and security seem to develop the cultural characteristics and effective workforces that enable economic growth. For the many societies that have not enjoyed long periods of stability, industrialization has not been a blessing. Clark also dissects the notion, championed by Jared Diamond in Guns, Germs, and Steel, that natural endowments such as geography account for differences in the wealth of nations.
