This book goes where none has gone before: the dark, convoluted, alleys inside the conservation laws of India. We have seen compilations of laws and rules, with discussions on judgments and case laws. But no one has dissected our conservation laws with the purpose of identifying the features which militate against conservation itself. Now we know that the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, our principal conservation tool, is riddled with internal contradictions and inconsistencies. Also, that we often violate some of its provisions when we comply with others. The government imperiously uses one law to do things which other laws prohibit. And, we have made new laws to undermine existing ones. The book illustrates how the country has committed ecological harakiri by bringing in the Forest Rights Act 2006.The author also shows how these bickering laws can still be fitted seamlessly together by smoothening their rough edges. He even argues in favour of a single integrated conservation law.Dr. H.S. Pabla, formerly of the Indian Forest Service, has spent 43 years conserving wildlife, 35 of them at the frontline. If he says the conservation laws need to change, probably they do.

Dr M.K. Ranjitsinh has had an unparalleled role in India's wildlife conservation history. He was the prime architect of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 and of the Central government schemes to assist national parks and sanctuaries. His passion for saving endangered species continues after his retirement, whether in planning the relocation of the Asiatic lion from Gir forest, the reintroduction of the cheetah into the grasslands of central India, or in saving from extinction the Kashmir stag, the Manipur brow-antlered deer and the Great Indian bustard.A Life with Wildlife traces the course of wildlife from the princely and British era to the present and shows how wildlife conservation efforts in India have always emanated from the upper echelons of power. The book reveals the challenges of conservation in a democracy like India, and how to counteract them. There is also a candid, never-revealed-before account of the Bhopal gas tragedy from someone who played a pivotal role in its aftermath. This delightful first-hand narrative is in its essence the history of nature conservation in India, by a person who was part of it and contributed to it, during its most tumultuous period.

This book is about a question that bothers no one in India: Why preserve wild animals despite the danger they pose to human life and property? While the whole world is conserving wildlife as a natural resource to support national economies, India preserves dangerous animals just for the heck of it. While the world feeds millions and makes billions from wildlife, an impoverished India says we want none of it. As a result, both, the animals and people, are just struggling to survive. HS Pabla, of the Indian Forest Service, spent 35 years trying to preserve India's wildlife, wondering: why? When he found an answer, that wildlife can be the backbone of the rural economy, rather than just being a menace, he found himself pitted against his own Government and peers. Here he bares his heart about how the Indian conservation paradigm is, surprisingly, neither rooted in its cultural and religious traditions, nor has any vision for the future. India will be poorer if she is able to save wild animals which have no use either for the tourist or for the hunter, he argues. Millions of acres of wilderness have been saved worldwide because the public wants to see or hunt wild animals on those lands. Wildlife tourism works both for people and for animals. This book, the first in a trilogy, shows how and where.

India is not India without its wild animals. However, conservation of wildlife leads to misery for millions of people. It conflicts with the constitutional guarantee of people's right to life and property. It amounts to knowingly causing death, injury or property damage, a crime under the Indian Penal Code. Successful conservation spells doom and gloom for more people. Preserving dangerous animals costs the country billions but we are dead against earning anything from this indulgence. All in the name of our love for wildlife. Wildlife corridors, the darling of the nature lovers of India, are like an expensive antibiotic with serious side effects and no guarantee of cure. We invite ever more devastating fires by preventing benign and benevolent forest fires. We have derecognized all protected areas and reserve forests through the Forest Rights Act. The way we do our wildlife conservation is perplexing. Such conservation is neither sustainable nor desirable. H.S. Pabla, former Chief Wild Life Warden of Madhya Pradesh, says that conservation of wildlife can be and must be done differently. It has to be based on commonsense, pragmatism, science and sensible laws.

Our ancient scriptures and epics are testimony to our spectacular wildlife heritage. Our ancestors worshipped Nature and considered themselves as the custodian of wildlife. The status of animals in the wild, particularly large mammals, act as barometers of the health of their natural habitats. Wildlife management and conservation, therefore, should not narrowly focus on practices that are heavily slanted towards animals to the exclusion of plant life that form a part of the food chain of all living creatures. Further, the people's involvement is crucial to protection and conservation of our wildlife population. The present volume is a compilation of critical contributions highlighting the nature and extent of the threats to our wildlife and the conservation and management practices that are appropriate to contain such threats. This volume is a source material for wildlife conservationists and also useful for lay persons interested in wildlife preservation.
