Originally this book was centered on identifying only one hundred women until Mrs. Michelle Obama became the first African American First Lady; thus it became apparent that she had to be added to this list thereby she became the one hundred and one most influential women in my life. I can truly begin and end appropriately when I refer to the women who had a profound effect on me and my life extends from my little white house on a dirt road in Bulloch County Georgia to the White House located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC. I am not sure just how many of the readers will receive my reference to scripture as I will often refer to but I want to start with a quote: “give honor to where honor is due; and tribute tow where tribute is due.” These one hundred and one women stories and lives have certainly influenced me, guided me, taught me and help to prepare me to live and have a wholesome and wealthy life whereby it is has contributed to my entire wellness. Wholeness, wealth and wellness come in a variety of ways; however, often times they are not easily recognized because they are not in a materialistic appearance which can be touched or perceived. It is now my esteemed pleasure to introduce you to the women of honor who contributed too much to me. I was able to look beyond my economic, social, financial circumstances into a new realm of endless possibilities.

Inspired by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the author has selected eleven other First Ladies who played vital roles in shaping their husbands' lives and, tangentially, their nation's destiny. A few were responsible for prodding their reluctant husbands toward the White House. Our wartime First Ladies gave their husbands the kind of wifely support which made it possible for them to carry out their responsibilities. One became "acting President" during her husband's serious illness and another became her disabled husband's eyes and ears during the White House years. The twelve women included in this book are women of strong will and nimble wit, and they made their presence in the White House felt. -- Adapted from the introduction to the book.

"Thank You, Mr. President." From the woman who has reported on every president from Kennedy to Clinton comes a privileged glimpse into the White House -- and a telling record of the ever-changing relationship between the presidency and the press. Helen Thomas wanted to be a reporter from her earliest years. She turned a copy-aide job at the Washington Daily News into a powerful and successful career spanning thirty-seven years and eight U.S. presidents. Assigned to the White House press corps in 1961. Thomas was the first woman to close a press conference with "Thank you. Mr. President." She was also the first female president of the White House Correspondents Association and the first woman member, later president, of the Gridiron Club. In this revealing memoir, which includes hundreds of anecdotes, observations, and personal details. Thomas looks back on a career spent with presidents at home and abroad, on the ground and in the air. Providing a unique view of the past four decades of presidential history. Front Row at the White House offers a seasoned study of the relationship between the chief executive officer and the press -- a relationship that is sometimes uneasy, sometimes playful, yet always integral to the democratic process.
