This book will transport the reader through a sixteen year adventure that we as a family experienced, with all its trials and tribulations. How we learnt to live with and work alongside and try to understand apartheid and all the different cultures and customs of the people of South Africa, up to and past its transformation into democracy. Our interests, hobbies, activities and passions are described and journeys and travel are detailed with relevant history. Our love of the fauna and flora and wildlife are expressed as are passions for the railways and preservation. But above all is our love of this country- its wide diversity, cultures, customs and people. Phil and Helen Braithwaite.

After On the Mines, The Transported of KwaNdebele is the second of David Goldblatt's books to be redesigned and expanded by the artist for Steidl Publishers. Dating originally from 1989, it talks about the workers of an apartheid tribal homeland for blacks, KwaNdebele, which has no industry, very few opportunities for jobs and is a long way from the nearest industrial-commercial activity of white-controlled Pretoria. Workers from KwaNdebele catch buses in the very early morning, some as early as 2:45 am, in order to be at their workplaces in Pretoria by 7:00. At the end of the day they repeat the journey in the other direction, to get home at between 8 and 10 pm. Goldblatt takes us on their bone-jarring journeys through the night, which is a metaphor for their arduous struggle toward freedom itself. In photographs devoid of sentimentality and artifice, the grim determination of these people to survive and overcome emerges in almost heroic terms. Brenda Goldblatt, filmmaker and writer, interviewed some of the bus-riding workers who endured not only these journeys but a civil war precipitated by the apartheid government's attempt to foist a kind of independence on KwaNdebele--a condition which would have made the workers foreigners in the land of their birth, South Africa, and thus deprived them of their limited right to work there. Interviews with contemporary (2012) bus-riders fill out the account. Phillip van Niekerk, former editor of the Mail & Guardian, provides an essay on KwaNdebele, its place in the logic of grand apartheid and its half-life in post-apartheid South Africa.

There is a cliché the more things change, the more they remain the same. Does this aptly describe the true nature of the African continent?Vol. 1 and 2 of this trilogy take us through epic periods in African Odyssey. In Vol. 3, we finally see the 21st century ushering in optimism and the hope of better things ahead as leaders embarked on programmes of the regeneration of the African continent. The continental body, Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was transformed into the African Union (AU) with institutions and programmes aimed at helping African countries, individually and collectively, to move faster towards regeneration and development. Many countries embraced and applied democratic principles and ethos. Human rights became the rallying mantra for the masses. Economic development and technological advancement remained on the agenda of many countries. An air of renaissance became prevalent across the African continent. And yet, one wonders whether the 2019 headlines, a far cry from the optimism and hope, are a true reflection of a continent that has seem more indecencies of wars, conflicts and rape of resources than any other? Are the headlines a summary of unavoidable pains of birth or rebirth? The author embarked on an effort to capture history, connect the dots and therefore contribute to on-going regeneration efforts of various actors on the African scene. With this detailed and comprehensive scholarly work, the author challenges Africa and Africans to avoid repeating past mistakes. The Swahili adage: Life can be understood backwards, but must be lived forwards, summarises the author's instructive message for Africa, a continent whose might and greatness cannot be denied.

An inspiring story of one man’s rise from poverty and oppression to success and fame in the international world of opera ... It is a difficult undertaking for any human to escape the cycle of poverty, but to do so from one of the world’s most complex political systems, with a brutal history of segregation and deprivation, is nothing short of a miracle. Yet Musa Ngqungwana’s story doesn’t end there. Not only did he manage to extricate himself from his impoverished past, but he found his way to the great opera houses of the world, attaining immense success in an affluent art form that bears no resemblance to his upbringing or culture. Musa’s life and career are proof that any human can overcome the devastating effects of discrimination and poverty. Odyssey of an African Opera Singer chronicles Musa’s journey from the townships of South Africa to the world stage. It is a story of hope, showing how humans, no matter their situation, have the opportunity to claim their gifts, develop them and use them to help others in need. A captivating story that will inspire anyone who has ever had a dream ...

SynopsisFirst a tragic suicide and then a birth. This is the story of a child growing up in Johannesburg during the height of Apartheid in South Africa. The first years were lived in the shadow of close family friends; the activist Bishop Trevor Huddleston, the journalists Anthony Sampson and James Cameron, and the author Nadine Gordimer. Huddleston defiantly christened the baby boy 'Crispin' in the black township of Sophiatown, beyond the 'white' city of Johannesburg. It was an illegal act under repressive white law. Crispin's mother Jasmine, an active member of the anti-Apartheid Black Sash movement, came perilously close to being sent to jail.In the mid-1950s the family emigrated to the Gold Coast in West Africa, which later became the first colony in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence. These were formative years not only in Crispin's early childhood but they were also important years for the emergence of a dynamic new nation called Ghana which attracted world attention overnight.Amidst increasing tension between East and West, the Third World found itself at a political cross road. The Cold War had begun and the Space Race was set. During this period of global mistrust and at the age of only 10, Crispin was sent thousands of miles away from the family's African home to a Quaker boarding school in Somerset. Despair and extreme loneliness were only really encountered by the children of expatriates when they were sent home to Britain for secondary schooling. Unprepared for the sudden introduction to England, it would take Crispin several soul-searching years to adjust and recover. This account is of not so long ago and is seen through the eyes of a young child desperately trying to comprehend the disparities of the English way of life during the final years of Empire when developed nations warily took notice of the awakening African continent emerging from a world rather different to the one we live in today.Appraisals'This exquisitely illustrated book captures that post-colonial period in our history, through childhood memories and personal stories. Crispin's eye for detail is unparalleled, funny, touching, and poignant.' Nick Broomfield, documentary film director'A very vivid account, alive with detail, of a world born in the eyes of a child and of an era and place that does not exist any more. It is a gem from the first page to the last.'Peter Owen-Jones, Author, television presenter and Vicar of Firle'By far the most elegant childhood memoir I have ever handled ...'Barnaby Rogerson, Author and director of Eland Books
