Al principi va ser el guió d'una pel·lícula de trenta minuts per a una sèrie de dotze episodis, els Contes eròtics. El projecte es va encallar, Auster el va deixar de banda i va començar a escriure El llibre de les il·lusions. Pero com que a la literatura tot es transforma, la història de Martin Frost i Claire es va convertir en una de les últimes pel·lícules de Hector Mann, el crepuscular còmic i director de cine protagonista d'aquella novel·la. I ara, l'últim i potser definitiu avatar deLa vida interior d'en Martin Frost, és aquest guió de la pel·lícula que Paul Auster ha escrit i dirigit, una fulgurant celebració dels plaers de l'amor, de l'art, de la invenció, de la trama subterrània que ens envolta i (ens porta a tots) a l'infinit laberint de la vida i la literatura.
