Emergency is a collection of true stories about events where disaster seems imminent. Yet each situation is concluded without loss of life thanks to the skill of the pilots and their crews, whose bravery and resourcefulness have earned them well-deserved commendations. Written by a British Airways First Officer, Stanley Stewart, who has spoken at first hand with the pilots and crews involved in all the incidents recorded here, the book offers a unique insight into what really happened: not the passengers eye-view, which in many cases is already documented, but the view from the flight deck of the aircraft itself.

Human Performance On The Flight Deck written by Don Harris and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Taking an integrated, systems approach to dealing exclusively with the human performance issues encountered on the flight deck of the modern airliner, this book describes the inter-relationships between the various application areas of human factors, recognising that the human contribution to the operation of an airliner does not fall into neat pigeonholes. The relationship between areas such as pilot selection, training, flight deck design and safety management is continually emphasised within the book. It also affirms the upside of human factors in aviation - the positive contribution that it can make to the industry - and avoids placing undue emphasis on when the human component fails. The book is divided into four main parts. Part one describes the underpinning science base, with chapters on human information processing, workload, situation awareness, decision making, error and individual differences. Part two of the book looks at the human in the system, containing chapters on pilot selection, simulation and training, stress, fatigue and alcohol, and environmental stressors. Part three takes a closer look at the machine (the aircraft), beginning with an examination of flight deck display design, followed by chapters on aircraft control, flight deck automation, and HCI on the flight deck. Part four completes the volume with a consideration of safety management issues, both on the flight deck and across the airline; the final chapter in this section looks at human factors for incident and accident investigation. The book is written for professionals within the aviation industry, both on the flight deck and elsewhere, for post-graduate students and for researchers working in the area.

This document recommends criteria to assure adequate visibility from the flight deck. The flight deck windshield must provide sufficient external vision to permit the pilot to perform any maneuvers within the operating limits of the aircraft safely and at the same time afford an unobstructed view of the flight instruments and other critical components and displays from the same eye position.

I have always wanted to fly. The job of an airline pilot is an interesting one. No doubt. He or she battles with elements the passenger never sees, faces dangers only he knows and forms a relationship that is a romance between man, machine, and endless sky! While the passengers sleep, you do your best to avoid clouds, winds, storms and all else. One city today, another tomorrow. Breakfast in Lagos, lunch in London and dinner in Frankfurt. To the man on the ground, a life of glitz and glamour, but is it really? It is exciting to fly from one destination to another; sometimes, visiting more cities in a year than most people do in their entire lives. The truth is, after a while it, becomes what it is - just another job that takes you away from home, keeps you awake at all hours, moves you from one hotel room to another, through several time zones within days and often leaves you wondering, "Where am I?" It is a job you must love, or you would quickly find yourself disgruntled and discontented. When the excitement of battling elements and living life at 33,000 feet above sea level wears off, you need something bigger than a paycheck to keep you sane when the turbulence hits at 2am and you're flying over the Atlantic. I have always wanted to fly. Flying is the one profession that spoke my name from as long as I can remember myself wanting anything. I have been privileged to have this dream come true. Everyday of my life, I am grateful that I got the opportunity to live my dream. In the course of this career, I have found myself lonely, afraid, unsure, excited, upset, happy and all the gamut of human emotions. I have met men, women and children of every race and experienced cultures beyond mine. I have looked around me and learnt many lessons from my travels around the world. Some of these experiences and lessons form the bulk of this book. It is my view of the world from the cockpit and from deep within me as I have sat in hotel room after hotel room, city after city; storm after storm and time zone after time zone. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelt. Let's fly! TSE, somewhere on Earth.

I Have Control written by Keith Spragg and has been published by The Crowood Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-31 with Transportation categories.

Between 1967 and 1997 Keith Spragg progressed from the greenest new co-pilot on a piston-engined Vickers Viking to a fully qualified jet captain. He then went on to become an experienced pilot trainer and examiner, ultimately flying ten different types with nine different airlines. The story of that journey, told in I Have Control, is a personal one but is also part of the wider story of airline development. Keith witnessed many changes and it was not only the aircraft that changed; the training, attitudes and culture of airline pilots themselves were transformed over that period. Under the day-to-day demands of disrupted rosters and unsociable hours, the moments of humour and the need to squeeze as much fun as possible out of every day, the significance of these changes was not always obvious. Now, with time to reflect, the small boy's fascination with flight lives on. While the job changed, the rewards, the comradeship and the sense of privilege continued. But now Keith asks tough questions about the application of technology. Is the modern flight deck fit for purpose? Have we sacrificed skill on the altar of technology? How should the industry respond to the prospect of artificial intelligence and pilotless airliners? His account will be of interest to all aviation enthusiasts and is illustrated with 8 colour photographs in a four-page colour section.
