Excerpt from A Wall-Street Bear in Europe, 1855: With His Familiar Foreign Journal of a Tour Through Portions of England, Scotland, France and Italy The following Journal was communicated by letter to the "Saratoga Republican," printed at "Saratoga Springs," N. Y., by Mr. Thomas G. Young. Applications having been made for back numbers, which could not be supplied, it has been deemed civil and polite to re-issue it in its present form; and, as in the first instance, without any expectation of pecuniary profit. As the Journal is written in a free and easy style, errors of composition will be pretty sure to be discovered; and this defect is rendered the more probable, as the writer was unable to read and correct the proof sheets. If these pages contain any errors of fact, they have crept in unwittingly, for the author has endeavored to tell the truth although it sadly interferes with the romantic notions many Americans imbibe from highly colored books of travels made to sell: and whose learned features, exhibiting an intimate acquaintance with ancient and modem history, have been borrowed from "Murray's Hand Books for Travellers." When eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Americans made their Grand Tour of Europe, what did they learn about themselves? While visiting Europe In 1844, Harry McCall of Philadelphia wrote to his cousin back home of his disappointment. He didn’t mind Paris, but he preferred the company of Americans to Parisians. Furthermore, he vowed to be “an American, heart and soul” wherever he traveled, but “particularly in England.” Why was he in Europe if he found it so distasteful? After all, travel in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was expensive, time consuming, and frequently uncomfortable. Being American in Europe, 1750–1860 tracks the adventures of American travelers while exploring large questions about how these experiences affected national identity. Daniel Kilbride searched the diaries, letters, published accounts, and guidebooks written between the late colonial period and the Civil War. His sources are written by people who, while prominent in their own time, are largely obscure today, making this account fresh and unusual. Exposure to the Old World generated varied and contradictory concepts of American nationality. Travelers often had diverse perspectives because of their region of origin, race, gender, and class. Americans in Europe struggled with the tension between defining the United States as a distinct civilization and situating it within a wider world. Kilbride describes how these travelers defined themselves while they observed the politics, economy, morals, manners, and customs of Europeans. He locates an increasingly articulate and refined sense of simplicity and virtue among these visitors and a gradual disappearance of their feelings of awe and inferiority.

How does one spot the bottom of a bear market? What brings a bear to its end? There are few more important questions to be answered in modern finance. Financial market history is a guide to understanding the future. Looking at the four occasions when US equities were particularly cheap - 1921, 1932, 1949 and 1982 - Russell Napier sets out to answer these questions by analysing every article in the Wall Street Journal from either side of the market bottom. In the 70,000 articles he examines, one begins to understand the features which indicate that a great buying opportunity is emerging. By looking at how markets really did work in these bear-market bottoms, rather than theorising how they should work, Napier offers investors a financial field guide to making the best provisions for the future. This new edition includes a brand new preface from the author and a foreword by Merryn Somerset Webb.

A collection of anecdotes for each day of the year on the subject of travel and exploration from Charles Darwin, Michael Palin, Evelyn Waugh, and others.
