A new method for wideband amplifier design has been developed. The significant feature of this method is the simultaneous determination of the optimized pole locations of the input and output side matching equalizer functions based on discrete frequency data. This produces upgraded performance of wideband amplifiers.

Abstract: This thesis presents two tunable matching network designs relying on varactors. The matching network should provide and instantaneous optimized impedance according to different power levels of the power amplifier. The matching networks are designed for an high efficiency class B power amplifier operating at 2 G Hz. Two topologies for the load matching network are considered in this thesis: the Pi network and the T network. The varactors are integrated as part of the load network. By changing the biasing voltages on the varactors, the value of capacitors can be varied and the output impedance modified. The design procedure followed consists in determining the design parameters yielding the maximum load impedance range that can be provided by the network. The major research steps followed include (1) the computational algorithm development, (2) ADS simulations, (3) circuit fabrication and (4) measurements.

The modern wireless communication systems require modulated signals with wide modulation bandwidth. This, in turns, requires signals with very high dynamic range and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This means that the amplifier in the base-station has to work at a power back-off as large as the dynamic range of the signal, so that the amplifier has a high linearity in this region. For the standard single-stage amplifiers, this large power back-off reduces the efficiency dramatically. In this work, a three-way Doherty power amplifier (DPA) aiming at high power efficiency within a dynamic range of 9.5 dB, is designed and fabricated using partitioning design approach. The partitioning design approach decomposes a complex design task into small-sized, well-controllable, and verifiable subcircuits. This advanced straight forward method has shown very promising results. Using this design approach, a three-way DPA has been designed to demonstrate the advantages of this reliable design technique as well. Based on the design of a single-stage power amplifier and proposing a novel output power combiner, a 6 W three-way DPA has been designed which allows the mandatory load modulation principle in three-way DPA structures to be realized with simpler elements, whereas the design of a standard Doherty combiner would have been very challenging and not practical due to the extremely small value of its characteristic line impedance. The proposed combiner is calculated for a three-way DPA with 2-mm AlGaN/GaN-HEMTs. The simulation result shows a very good load modulation for the amplifier, which confirms the theoretical expectation for a three-way DPA. The efficiency of the designed 6 W three-way DPA at large back-off shows very promising values compared to recently reported amplifiers. The measured IMD3 products confirm the good linearity of the amplifier as well. Accordingly, the proposed power combiner and the design strategy are recommended to be used as the preferred option for designing three-way DPA structures with very high output power.

Since the early days of telecommunication and warfare technologies, the power amplifier has been playing a key role in signal transmission and reception as the transport portal. There are many studies and research fields that are dedicated to a single goal: improving the performance of power amplifiers. The real frequency technique (RFT) and its sister the simplified real technique (SRFT) revolutionized RF power amplifier design by allowing nonlinear treatment of RF components and initiating the use of numerical optimization to analyze and synthesize nonlinear systems. The latest research in amplifier design has been going in this direction as optimization and computation techniques become more advanced and effective in solving highly complex nonlinear systems. The novel bounded performance technique (BPT) is developed to further popularize the use of optimization in power amplifier design. The design process depends on the use of load-pull data, an effective way to characterize nonlinear devices. The method is simple: creating a highly effective cost function for the optimization of the matching network that provides the required performance of the amplifier. Additionally, BPT cost function enables an infinite degree of design freedom that allows the design of complex amplifiers. In this dissertation, the effectiveness and versatility of BPT are demonstrated in the designs of some typical and advanced amplifiers including: a medium bandwidth, an ultra-wide bandwidth, a high-efficiency class-J, a C-band Doherty, a cascade, a configurable, and a multi-band. In each design case, BPT makes the design process feasible and observable. The fabricated amplifiers are all first pass successes and show performance that is on par or exceeds that of prior or contemporary design arts. This research shows that BPT makes the design process of complex amplifiers simpler, less laborious, and more fun. This work contributes to the advancement of modern communication systems in which power amplifiers are the most critical component.

In this paper a new approach to the design of stable broadband amplifier is shown. A new hybrid optimization algorithm based on Controlled Random Search (CRS) procedure for global optimization and Adaptive Complex "Acomplex" has been applied to the design of the broad-band microwave amplifier, Design method takes gain flatness, low noise factor, amplifier stability, loss factor associated with each reactive element and matching circuit realizability into account simultaneously,

This work covers two bases, both performance optimization strategies and a complete introduction to mathematical procedures required for a successful circuit design. It starts from the basics of mathematical procedures and circuit analysis before moving on to the more advanced topics of system optimization and synthesis, along with the complete mathematical apparatus required. The authors have been at pains to make the material accessible by limiting the mathematics to the necessary minimum.
