The brain is a material part of the body contained within the skull. It is sensitized to absorb all information sent to it from inside and outside of the body. It contains the means to process this information and pass it on to the mind, which is not a material part of the body, but lies somewhere in the brain. You can lose it, abuse it or use it in your search for wisdom. If you lose it, we may find that you are demented, diseased, or even insane or a fool who has destroyed it with things that have taken away its usefulness. Men have been studying these mysteries for centuries. No one has been able to unlock the matter of the brain, the shadow of the mind, or the secrets therein, where we also have a soul and a conscience. The brain is a receiver, the mind is the decision maker, the conscience passes judgement. There is also a spirit that is the self, which is in control, and in the Christian, a Holy Spirit which guards the soul. Much has been written about the brain in the physical. Scientific, and psychological realms, concerning what the so- called grey matter in our heads is all about. This book is not concerned with those things, only the parts that no one can figure out. Wisdom is what makes good people nice. Derek Kidner The next thing to being wise ones-self is to live in a circle of those who are. C. S. Lewis The task thy wisdom hath assigned, O let me cheerfully fulfill; In all my works thy presence find, and prove thy good and perfect will. Wesley

Spiritual discernment is good for more than just making monumental decisions according to God's will. It is an essential, day-to-day activity that allows thoughtful Christians to separate the truth of God from error and to distinguish right from wrong in all kinds of settings and situations. It is also a skill-something that any person can develop and improve, especially with the guidance in this book. Written by a leading evangelical blogger, The Discipline of Spiritual Discernment is an uplifting, scripturally grounded work that explains the need for discernment, its challenges, and the steps that will cultivate it. Author Tim Challies does not do the discerning for readers; he simply shows them how to practically apply scriptural tools, principles, and wisdom so that their conclusions about everything-people, teachings, decisions, media, and organizations-will be consistent with God's Word.

Henri Nouwen, beloved author, priest and world-renowned counsellor and guide, understood the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community and relationships. Although Henri counselled many people during his lifetime, his principles of discernment were never collected into a single volume. Now, in association with the Nouwen Legacy Trust, Michael Christensen - one of Nouwen's long-time students - and Rebecca Laird have taken his coursework, journals and unpublished writings and created the definitive resource on spiritual discernment. Discernment is the final volume in a trilogy of Nouwen titles. Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Formation are also published by SPCK.

Empowers the preacher to understand the role of wise leader to which he or she has been called, and to claim that role with conviction and joy. Pastors are called to an exciting ministry of proclamation and leadership. That excitement, however, often turns to demoralization and burnout as pastors become increasingly uncertain of what their role is supposed to be. Competing claims by the congregation, the denomination, and society about who and what the pastor is supposed to be breed confusion and disappointment. Are they primarily managers? Therapists? Fundraisers? A way out of this confusion lies in reclaiming the biblical understanding of who the pastor is. One of the biblical roles within the pastoral vocation that often goes neglected is that of wise teacher or sage. Scripture presents as a model of pastoral leadership those who interpret the word and will of God for daily living. Especially in their preaching, pastors are called to help the congregation understand their place in God’s world. In this book, Alyce McKenzie lays out the four qualities of the wise teacher–the bended knee, the listening heart, the cool head, and the courageous voice–and encourages pastors to make each of these integral to their ministry and vocation. She goes on to demonstrate that the sermon is the prime opportunity to function in the role of wise teacher. She offers strategies for applying biblical wisdom to all areas of everyday life. The strategies include: (1) Preaching that is as sensory as life is; using imagery, metaphor, simile, and story to connect with people’s emotions as well as their intellect. (2) Preaching that uses first-person experiences without being narcissistic. (3) Preaching that teaches without boring. (4) Preaching on public, often controversial issues that minimizes defensiveness and maximizes dialogue.

Wisdom requires clear vision-the ability to see the things that matter, to pass over the things that don't, and the discernment to know the difference. In a fast-paced world, wisdom is also sometimes not equated with optimism. But is this pessimism about the future wise? Not according to the new book, Optimistic Wisdom: Living in Peace without Worry, by Dr. Srisuda Dhamwichukorn. The waves of wisdom that travel from East to West have a peaceful swell; the ocean of Pacific is peaceful. The tradition of wisdom taught from the Far East has much to do with discernment. While Western traditions often examine one's place in the world by looking outside first, the Eastern traditions teach the opposite: look first inside, then prepare for whatever adventures the outside may offer. Dr. Dhamwichukorn hints at this complementary view of the two traditions, along with the places where they peacefully interact. A native of Thailand, she grew up in a land of contrasts: sprawling, urban Bangkok has its islands of peace, the havens of shelter from worry that have traditionally housed the most clear-eyed of monks and buddhas. So how do these teachings find wisdom without worry? A fundamental tenet that often raises questions is the realization that life is suffering. If the future is a path away from worry and towards peace, then many teachers have taught what amounts to a startling starting point. As Dr. Dhamwichukorn writes in easily understandable affirmations, the first shore relieving this ocean of suffering is the knowledge that the path exists in the first place. The path, the discipline, the peaceful mind-these are the refuges of those free from worry. Therein lies the excitement of peace: freedom. Even as adventures present what may appear to be evidence of selfishness, a shortage of love and compassion, and the unforgiving failure to forget those things that don't matter, the freedom of peace persists. That is this book's discerning quality-to balance selfishness with sharing, to meet hate with love, to find peace without worry. Written in a modern, but simple style, the beautiful book Optimistic Wisdom: Living in Peace Without Worry offers rest and reflection in a troubled ocean. This is a guide filled with optimism. The author, having flown across the Pacific from Thailand to America, refreshingly describes why that ocean between East and West is named for peace itself. Where can Wisdom be found? Job 28.12 Wisdom is usually associated with profound knowledge acquired over time. In ancient times, however, wisdom was also discerned as a force or factor of nature. Wisdom was not only found in human minds but also in God's creation. The wise of biblical times--as distinct from prophets, priests and kings--were tantamount to the 'scientists' of their day. And like scientists, they had a way of discerning wisdom in creation that involved the rational steps of observation, analysis and discernment. The classic question posed by the wise was: Where can wisdom be found? Or more precisely: Where and how can wisdom be discerned in nature? Or in contemporary terms: How might we follow the approach of ancient scientists and find innate wisdom 'wired' in nature today? I invite you to join me as I seek to discern Wisdom embedded in nature, and acquire a Wisdom awareness-- a cosmic consciousness that evokes a sense of wonder and profound mystery. From the Preface Norman Habel is a Professorial Fellow at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. He has long been involved in issues of biblical interpretation and eco-justice, including the task of reading the Bible from the perspective of Earth. Thee Earth Bible series and the Earth Bible Commentary series, both of which he initiated, reflect this ecological orientation. He is also concerned about how we read the book of nature and discern its mysteries.

Hebrew University Professor Emeritus and Israel Prize recipient Eliezer Schweid (1929-2022) is widely regarded as one of the greatest historians of Jewish thought of our era. In Siddur Hatefillah, he probes the Jewish prayer book as a reflection of Judaism's unity and continuity as a unique spiritual entity; and as the most popular, most uttered, and internalized text of the Jewish people. Schweid explores texts which process religious philosophical teaching into the language of prayer, and/or express philosophical ideas in prayer’s special language – which the worshipper reflects upon in order to direct prayer, and through which flows hoped-for feedback. With the addition of historical, philological, and literary contexts, the study provides the reader with first-time access to the comprehensive meaning of Jewish prayer—filling a vacuum in both the experience and scholarship of Jewish worship.
