Excerpt from A Woman of Yesterday I rise and raise my clasped hands to Thee! Henceforth, the darkness hath no part in me, Thy sacrifice this day, - Abiding firm, and with a freeman's might Stemming the waves of passion in the fight. - John Henry Newman. Where the Monk River makes its way through the mountain wall in one of the northern counties of Vermont, lies the small, white village of Haran. Although isolated and remote from the world, unknown and unconsidered beyond certain narrow limits, this village possessed, forty years ago, a local importance as being the county town, the seat also of a Young Ladies' Seminary of some reputation, and an Orthodox church which boasted a line of ministers of exalted piety and scholarly attainment. The incumbent in the year 1869 was the Rev. Samuel Mallison. His pastorate had now extended over twenty years, and he was reverenced far beyond the bounds of his parish for learning and godliness. It was a June Saturday night in that year, and the hour was late. In the low-roofed garret of the parsonage of Haran the figure of a tall, thin girl with a candle in her hand moved swiftly and softly to the head of a steep flight of stairs, which gave access to the garret from the floor below. Some one had called her name. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Human Woman The spirit in which the following pages are offered to the public is not one in which any claims are made for women, as against men neither equality nor superi ority, nor any quality the insistence upon which tends to provoke the desire to con trovert or to condemn, is made the basis of what is hoped will be regarded as a sane and temperate exposition of the views of many women and perhaps more men. The arguments in favour of extending the franchise in any given direction being perfectly familiar to all who have con sidered the political aspect of public affairs, it has not been thought necessary to dwell upon them in connection with the present demand of duly qualified women to partici pate in the election of the representatives of the people. For, briefly, all the reasons that have in the past been advanced in favour of extending the franchise to men. Excerpt from Lost for a Woman: A Novel Jemima Ann sighs again, and this time it is not for the patrician sorrows of the lovely Duchess Isoline. In a general way she has not much time for melancholy musings. The life of Mrs. Hopkins' help does not hold many gaps for reflection. It is a breathless, dizzying round and rush - one long demnition grind, from week's end to week's end. And perhaps it is best it should be so, else even Jemima Ann, patient, plodding, strong of arm, stout of heart, sweet of temper, willing of mind, might go slowly melancholy mad. Excerpt from The Woman Who Dares Two young girls stood facing each other in a chamber whose windows looked out upon the peaceful serenity which surrounds a suburban home. One held the other's hand in her own, and gazed at the slender arm, which was encircled with four red bands just above the wrist - bracelets stamped in the flesh by cruel fingers. Slowly her gaze lifted to the other's face, which was downcast and pale, while her eyes sought to find and hold the sad ones that seemed to have no inclination to raise themselves. Excerpt from A Woman at Bay: Una Donna Y childhood was free and healthy. It would be useless to attempt to live it over again to try to make it sparkle as Of old before my imagination. I can see the child that was I at six years Of age, at ten, but as though I had dreamed her. A lovely dream which the faintest recall to the present instantly dispels.
