Außerhalb Finnlands ist Wolfsburg heute weltweit die einzige Stadt, die drei bedeutende Werke des Architekten Alvar Aalto besitzt: das Alvar-Aalto-Kulturhaus (1958–62) und die evangelischen Gemeindezentren Heilig-Geist (1959–61) und Stephanus (1962–68). Erst kurz zuvor hatte er mit dem Apartmenthaus für die INTERBAU 1957 in Berlin sein erstes Gebäude außerhalb der Heimat überhaupt errichtet. Die vorliegende Arbeit verfolgt die singuläre Karriere des international bekannten Architekten in der deutschen Nachkriegsmoderne. Baugeschichte, Gestalt und Entstehungshintergründe der Wolfsburger Bauten werden eingehend untersucht, gestützt auf umfangreiches, oft erstmals ausgewertetes Archivmaterial. Nach einer kurzen Rückschau auf die städtebauliche Geschichte Wolfsburgs im Dritten Reich wird die These formuliert, dass es der menschenfreundliche und organische Charakter seiner Bauten war, den man als einer jungen Demokratie angemessen verstand. Diese Sicht der Architektur Aaltos wird bis in die Zeit der Weimarer Republik zurückverfolgt, als Otto Völckers 1929 Aaltos Werk der deutschen Fachwelt bekannt machte. Aufgrund der seit 1933 bestehenden guten Kontakte zu Ernst Neufert leitete Aalto 1943 auf Einladung Albert Speers eine Studienreise finnischer Architekten für den Wiederaufbau zerstörter Städte in Deutschland. Durch das Einbeziehen der übrigen Projekte in der Bundesrepublik wird Aaltos Beitrag zur Gestaltung der Nachkriegsmoderne in Deutschland erstmals umfassend dargestellt.

Alvar Aalto and The Art of Landscape captures the essence of the Finnish architect’s landscape concept, emphasising culture and tradition, which characterised his approach to and understanding of architecture as part of the wider environment.
