Tall, sinister buildings loom with empty cavities and the air of foreboding. As you make your way through the pages of Abandoned Connecticut: First World Wasted, you will encounter tales of horror, rumors of torture, speculation of death, testaments to hauntings, and perhaps some of the most magnificent and alluring architecture New England has to offer. History crumbles into piles of brick and is hauled away with the trash. Is there any wonder that so many wish to explore our forgotten to document what will be lost? If not us, then who? So much has been lost that could have helped so many. Read through these pages and learn about our structural ghosts from their inception to their ultimate demise and a region that has evolved into a First World Wasted.

Abandoned Connecticut What is Connecticut known for? Connecticut is known for its beautiful fall foliage, Yale University, and being the home of ESPN. It is often regarded as a state of beauty, but as with every state, it is plagued with decay. The economic crash of 2008 set the ball in motion and cause d many to lose their housing and businesses. The Covid epidemic of 2020 further drove the nail into mom and pop stores seeing a vast number of them get shut down and never recover. If you drive down any major highway with strip malls, you will see the Closed, For Rent signs and empty buildings. Located in southern New England, Connecticut has a mixture of coastal cities and various rural areas populated with small towns. The city of Mystic is known for its seaport museum and its centuries old ships and the Mystic Aquarium On Long Island Sound, the city of New Haven is known as the home of Yale University and its acclaimed Peabody Museum of Natural History. Connecticut was one of the original 13 colonies and played a key role in the development of the nation. Out of all the states, Connecticut is ranked #3 in Healthcare, #6 in education and is 47.5% college educated. Some of the most cited reasons to move to Connecticut are: one of the most scenic states to see in every season, it is the ideal mix of urban and rural, it has beautiful beaches and great food, reportedly has high incomes and good job opportunities and possesses a low crime rate. That is great and all, but we are here for the abandoned! Living on the east coast and having an interest in the abandoned we were always drawn to the larger cities and more well known locations that possess many abandoned properties: Camden, Trenton, Philly, Baltimore, Pittsburg, New York City and the like. Out of all the states on the east coast, Connecticut was one of the last ones that I would expect to have interesting abandoned. When we were looking for locations to road trip to we found a few interesting spots and they were located in Connecticut. As always, when we plan a trip we research all the cities and locate the pins we make sure it is worth it and try to get more bang for our buck. We started in the cities and conducted extensive research for the abandoned, then fanned our way out until we had enough locations to make it worth while.

This collection of photographs, history, and firsthand accounts gives readers a glimpse at the roots of mental health. These vignettes are born of the personal stories of those who worked at these facilities, those who were institutionalized, and their families. The authors took the time to listen to their stories and endeavored to understand their past and recognize how these events continue to influence the mental health industry today. Pictured throughout are the physical relics of the places--the now largely abandoned asylums of Connecticut--where these stories unfurled.

Every time James Sutton gets close to someone, it ends in disaster. He’s abandoned at birth by his parents, at nine by his best friend Alex and his dog Trixie, at eighteen by his girlfriend Donna, and at thirty when his adoptive father commits suicide and leaves James alone ... again. On a rare warm day in January, James witnesses a man suffer a heart attack. The paramedics arrive in minutes and whisk the man away, failing to see the pair of glasses lying on the ground where the man collapsed. For James and his abandonment issues, this will not do. It’s time for a little payback on behalf of everyone—and every thing—that has ever been neglected or discarded. James is going to set things right again: one body part at a time.

The collaborators of A Guide to Haunted New England track the spirits of the “Constitution State” through its storied history. The emerald sheen illuminating the Sabbatarian burying ground, 8 Mile River’s misty figures which emerge at the Devil’s Hopyard, and flying demon skeletons on Charles Island—these bizarre haunts are uniquely Connecticut. In the ghostly lore of the state, the ambient ramblings of the Leatherman still ring out in the caves of Harwinton’s forests and the former residents of the Hale Homestead continue to roam the attic at night. Join authors and Paranormal United Research Founders, Thomas D’Agostino and his wife Arlene Nicholson, as they recount bone chilling mysteries from Putnam, Canton, New London and many more shadowy corners of the Nutmeg state. Includes photos! Praise for A Guide to Haunted New England “Fun, charming . . . includes not only locales with reported ghosts, but also sites with macabre (though not haunted) histories.”—True Crime Librarian “Anyone interested in exploring the haunted, macabre and abandoned throughout New England knows they can count on D’Agostino to find out more about the site’s history, past sightings and how to find them.”—Mobile RVing
